TerraNik
I've been teaching Jedi to handstand for the past 3 months (on and off)... I thought we'd do a bit more today and we're almost there!! Has anyone else tried this? Jedi was destined from a young age...

TerraNik
I used phone books... Started off backing up onto one phone book, then two, then three, then four... etc. It takes a while to build up the right muscles though so it's a rather slow process! Jedi will walk up the stairs backwards now and I've also shaped individual leg lifts out of teaching this trick! It's been a lot of fun!

TerraNik
I haven't added a cue yet. My ultimate goal is to get him doing it with no supports - once he's doing that I'll add a cue. He's just offering the behaviour at the moment (sometimes with a little encouragement of my hand near the ground - he often misses the books so I find keeping my hand there helps him 'find' them). Kelpie-i
Nik, absolutely fantastic!! Please, please, please let us know how you progress and of course, we MUST see the finished product. He looks so happy and comfortable doing it too!!
LilBailey
that is very cool. Glad you mentioned the part about buliding up muscles. Would hate for some one to try and copy with out thinking about that
TerraNik
Thanks everyone! I will definitely put up the finished product. Who knows when we'll get there though... I'm not pushing this trick too hard - He's got a bit of balance to develop!!! So true, LilBailey - it's very important to teach this trick slowly even if the dog looks ready for the next step. They need lots of recovery time between sessions. The minimum time between sessions for Jedi and I was 1 week and each session was very quick (5 min). He knew what he had to do, he just needed to get past the physical barrier!

ozjen
Well done, your making great progress with it. I've been working on and off with the same trick building muscle memory with my Aussie so I understand just how involved this trick is. Love the puppy picture, must have been a sign of things to come. Keep up the great training, have you checked out the Jay Sisler video on Youtube yet? Some great training ideas there, I taught my girl to summersault after watching the greyhound doing it but his dogs are fantastic.

ozjen
I taught my girl to summersault after watching the greyhound doing it but his dogs are fantastic. This I wanna see and how did you teach it?! Hi Rubystar Have got it on my camera, not too good though as I always have to try and set up the camera and then race over to the dog(doesn't work to well doing it that way). Still like to be close when she does it as I am abit nervous of injury if she goes over the wrong way. Can't load to the computer at the moment as my external hard drive where I load to has given up the ghost and is going back to get seen too, thankfully I still have the reciept and its less than a year old. I taught it on my bed, so that she had a comfortable landing while learning. She already knew how to tuck her head in and the handstand (not as good as the Keeshond) so it was just a case of ensuring she kept her head tucked in and giving some support so that she didn't twist as she went over. She is very trusting with regard to me showing her what I want so she had it worked out in the first lesson although she still uses me to kick of from. When I get the hard drive sorted out I'll be adding it to her Youtube site OZPAWFX, but if thats not soon I'll give you a personal demo when we catch up at the obedience.
