Shaping- What Have You Taught?

 Share

Recommended Posts

Inspired by my recent successes with Cosmo (as i posted in the brags thread) I am interested to know what everyone else has taught just by shaping? And if there were any positive or negative side effects that came from the shaping?

I have done lots of targetting, both nose and paw. I taught Zoe to put an object in a box by shaping and backchaining. I taught Kaos nose touch 2o2o contacts and 3 pole weave entry with shaping. Kaos's seesaw bang game was mostly shaping, little bit of luring at the start.

ETA: also shaped Zoe's digging active response for scent detection. She likes to use her paws, and I have to be careful if asking for nose target on something on the ground for her as she will tend to paw at it.

I've taught Ruby to close the door (targeting with her paw);

to go into a hula hoop, turn and sit (beginning of her box work for obedience - required a bit of luring at the start but phased that out pretty quickly);

to put both front paws onto a small stool (to begin on her back end awareness training);

to "take a bow";

that's all I can think of right now :thumbsup:

Considering I say that I don't shape I have actually shaped quite a few things!

Touching was done by shaping. She does the agility nose touches but will also go and touch a plate a couple of meters away.

I did retrieve using the shaping method.

Have just been doing weavers using shaping.

I didn't lure in any of the above but I do have trouble keeping quiet :thumbsup: Lucky the dog understand english so 'Mummy would like you to pick up the dumbbell' made sense to her :thumbsup:

I taught Diesel the retrieve shaping as well. Got stuck for a bit when he decided to throw the dumbell instead :) now just need to work on motivation to go out and get it.

I used phone books for the rear end awareness with Kaos, stopped though because he generalised it to the plank I was using for contact work.

I only lure to begin with occasionally, depends on what I am teaching, and how frustrated I get, and how determined I am to purely shape it :)

I shaped the dumbbell up to a point and then it just wasn't improving so I mixed things up a bit.

A couple of tricks - head down, dance, reverse through my legs (Jed just did it one day!?). Probably more but I can't remember!

Other things I tend to lure just in the very beginning and then shape.

I guess I'm lucky to have a dog that loves to learn by shaping. We learnt most of our agility skills- jumps, weaves, table, tunnels by shaping and those techniques are all solid. We used luring for her contacts and I have to admit that is the one area where she is less consistent, now that I think about it. I'm not sure how to go about retraining that with shaping though... suggestions?

We weren't introduced to shaping until we started agility, so most of our basic obedience skills (sit, drop, crawl, stand etc) were all done through luring. The only exclusion to that was spinning, which Lomani would do as part of her pre-dinner happy dance - I just added a word and signal to it and she now does it on cue.

I am definitely a shaping fan!

Poppy offers nose touches at interesting times ie she nose touches her dinner bowl and if not watched will go around and nose touch other people's nose touch plates at agility but that is all kind-of cute!!

Got a bit of nose touching of the dumbbell at first when I was using the plastic one, switched to the wood one and she stopped that. Can now use the white plastic one again.

I initially shaped the retrieve with Pete the pug and then employed other techniques (was running out of time and needed to get the behaviour happening asap).

With Gabe, I shaped his heeling, picking a tissue out of a box and leg touches (alternating paws touching my lifted knee) which now looks like a dance move because I don't have to lift my knees as high and he raises his front legs. And also leg weaves (although leg weaves began with some luring initially :)).

Superminty on this forum shaped an entire complex skill with her boy which was to put wallet into a basket and then carry the basket to her. All free shaping! Excellent work.

I shaped backwards walking and numerous targets. These are the only things I have on cue, though, at the moment.

We play shaping games a lot, but I never get around to putting things on cue.

I am free shaping jumps at the moment... Well, we've had one session a week or two ago. :) Must remember to get jumps out again.

I did some more tonight- shaped Cosmo on a dining chair with paws over the back of the chair and nsoe between paws- so praying on the dining chair! Super cute!! We went to do fetching tissue from box but started off with tissue in box and she just fetched the whole box!! :thumbsup: Think i might have to start that one with the tissue by itself! We put opening the cupboard on cue tonight too :rofl:

I am a very proud Mum!!

I've taught Bonnie a few tricks by shaping. The latest is, I run her through her tricks and have her favourite toy a few metres away. I then give the command "where's your toy?" she runs over to it and touches it with her nose and runs back to me for her reward. She's still not 100% with it - sometimes she trys to cheat by just running half way and turning back for her treat! :) I just give the command again in a firmer voice and she does it properly - little bugger.

Some of the other tricks I have taught by shaping:

"Wait" - I hold the treat in front of her and she sits and stares at it without moving. (this is very funny, sometimes her tail goes wildly and sometimes she drools a bit!!) Never seen a chi drool before....

"Spin" - she spins in a circle once and then sits for her treat.

"Cheeky" - she dances around on the spot and kicks her back legs out. This one has backfired a bit, as she does "cheeky" on the couch when I'm eating dinner sometimes....:thumbsup:
