ness
Ok I have to have a brag because its the final word I can add to this thread for a while since Kenzie is being spayed tomorrow so will be out of action for a while but I decided tonight I would pop the 2 sets of poles in the car and take the show on the road. Well she picked up where she left off at home. If anything she was driving harder and more committed to her poles then our previous sessions. Tickled pink with my little ratbags efforts after only minimal training time. She has the poles rotated 1/7 just about normal distance, was hitting entries from distance with good speed, head down driving through. She loves the game and always wants more then I train. Hopefully its a good place to take a break and let her "sleep on it" and she comes back just as strong when she has recovered from the operation. JulesP
Cute video Smisch! Sounds good Ness! I did 3 short training sessions today, definitely works doing the shorter sessions. In the last session Poppy corrected herself to go in the correct way, which made me pretty happy! Also found a toy that she really likes! A stress ball that she pinched from work! Obviously I can't tug with it but got some animation!
JulesP
I'll just talk to myself Poppy weaved 4 poles in a straight line last night So that is 4 poles in 5 days. I am wondering if I am not chucking her ball quick enough as she is a tad slow going through the weaves because she is waiting for the throw. I am not throwing it until she is pretty much through the poles as I don't want to throw it and then have her pop out and cheat. Don't want to call her off the toy as she is just getting her confidence with playing.
ness
Sorry Jules was dealing with miss Kenzie's spaying yesterday. Great news about Poppy. I didn't try to straighten the poles entirely as I wasn't happy with her extreme entries. Figured that could wait and there was no rush. Also figured I want the behavior generalised to other locations a bit first. Hopefully when she is recovered I can get on to straightening them. I find Kenzie is driving a bit hard and the one time I did try and straighten them she didn't bend herself back enough to get the second set. Was hitting the entry with no problems. Heidii
There seem to be a couple of us training weaves at the moment. How is it all going? I scored a copy of the 2x2 method from club! One of the joys of being an instructor, they have a great library that we can borrow from! The DVD is amazing but have to say it made me want to give up rather than inspiring me! Her One Jump made me think 'ok I can do that' but weaves had the opposite effect. Also I reckon you are fairly buggered with the method if your dog doesn't shape at all. Mine don't. Trying to get them to shape would cause too much angst I think. They get quite upset if not given direction! We are up to 4 poles offset. Poppy is trotting quite nicely through them. But don't don't think she quite understands what she is supposed to do yet. Hi JulesP! My dog is going great with his weaves now. We can now do six in a row from all directions...we are now waiting on our other 6 to be made! My dog is like yours, he prefers being given direction. I first started with free shaping but went onto giving the command of "weave" after 4 poles, to me the 2 x 2 was only done to improve his entries and the free shaping was making him slow and unsure of himself. People at my agility club dont agree with my method and think I shouldnt be giving any commands (like in the DVD) but it is working so much better for us and he now drives through them happier knowning that ive commanded him and he is doing it. I dont think its about doing EXACTLY what the DVD says, but taking bits it out of it and using it to the way it suits you and your dog best! keep up the great work everyone!! JulesP
I think an important thing to remember is that Greg and Susan will change things around if they need to for a particular dog. That is why they are great trainers!
ness
Think you need to get a video camera JulesP so we can see what Poppy is up to .
JulesP
I did wish I had one last night. Also did some retrieve work. Decide to try the two toy game..... Chucked the dumbbell, she ran and got that, chucked the toy and she ran off to get that but with the dumbbell still in her mouth Watching her trying to pick up the toy with the dumbbell still in her gob was hilarious! What did I learn? Don't use the dumbbell to play 2 toy game as she knows she isn't supposed to drop it! bad mummy!
ness
Huh why not - I have played the 2 toy game with Ness using the dumbbell and have also played it with Kenzie. The rule is really that if you ask them to present with the DB they shouldn't drop it. So you never wait for the dog to get within 1/2 meters and throw the food or toy because once they are in that zone they are then expected to present/front. JulesP
Because Poppy thinks she has to hold on to the dumbbell regardless. I have very serious border collies!

Heidii
Nice work Heidii - how does he go with the more complicated entries? Thanks Ness Yeh very good. I just did that clip in my tiny backyard to load up onto dogzonline to show. Heres a clip when we were just on the 4 poles. Most obstacles I set up I do the entry from the off side. Heres another: Here is when we were training off side entry with 2 x 2: The only problem I am facing, thats a worry to me at the moment is sometimes he isnt as fast as I'd like him to be. He is only quick the first 2 times I do it, if I try it again he slows down. Dont realy know how to fix this?
ness
Just watched your videos Heidii (actually I did watch them the other day and meant to comment) does he do the hard entries with the enthusiasm in the video when you had the 4 poles or when you have the 6 (like the one in your yard). I would say in the other video where you had the extra obstacles he wasn't really driving for the poles. He looked more committed and very impressive in the 6 pole vid but then it was just poles with nothing before it. I am just going on what I see in the videos. I mentioned to somebody that I hadn't tried it with my older girl because she wasn't toy motivated and I am not sure if you have tried but she said you could use the method using big chunks of food. Your collie doesn't look overly driven for the toy reward so either work at that separately or I would try using food if he is more driven for food then toys. You mentioned only doing it enthusiastically twice I would look at what your using to reward the dog for its efforts. I would also then only limit my session to 1 or 2 attempts in any one training session and hopefully leave the dog wanting more. Not an issue I face with my girl who will play again and again just for the chance to get her toy thrown.
JulesP
Make sure you train the easy entries too! I hadn't done any straight on with Poppy and she didn't know what I wanted, .
ness
But SG recommends starting each session with at least one or two repetitions in the "thin slice of the pie" to establish the reward line, so they still should do the easy entries with no problems. JulesP
Ness I had done no entries from the thin slice of the pie. Therefore Poppy had never gone in straight on. Am I helping anyone here or just making a dick of myself?
ness
Ah ok JulesP - I guess I just presumed since you were to establish the reward line on each training session that you would have done some easier entries. Genuine question if you don't establish the reward line with an easy entry - how does Poppy then know which way she is to enter the poles? I still had Kenzie deciding to occasionally weave from the "wrong direction", until I realized that I had trained the poles in the opposite direction the day before (had switched them as the sun wasn't in the best place for videoing) and she presumed she was to enter from the normal direction as I hadn't yet established a reward line. JulesP
I guess I am thinking about the reward line starting immediately after the poles, not before the poles. That is how all of SG diagrams has it anyhow. If Poppy has had any angst about the entry then I have rewarded her straight away, as her nose passes the poles. And you know how you rotate the poles around?? I think we have rotated around too. So she is going straight between the first 2 poles. And because she was coping with that I didn't think about straight on. it was when I had her on a wait and went to call her through the poles that I could see that she couldn't find her way from straight on. And straight on is probably how I will run most courses. Just thought I would mention it in case other people skipped the 'easy' stuff.
