Nevafollo
Hey guys any recommendations for a shampoo for a black dog to bring them up nice and shiney? Atm I have been using oatmeal shampoo and it tends to leave the little black pug very flakey after her bath and I know its not because I havent rinsed her properly because I definately do. Some one suggested to me to wash her two days before the show because they flakeyness goes away which is true BUT she a dirty little tramp who loves to roll in mud ect so I really need a shampoo that I can wash her the morning before or the night before so any help/suggestions would be good. becks
Any whitening shampoo will work as well if not better then the black shampoos. You can also try a cold tea rinse (leave the milk and sugar out though!!)
Dogsfevr
Some black shampoos can be very drying,The whitener work a treat on black dogs. Some will aslo do a quick rinse with white vinegar
poodlefan
The Groomers EPO black one would be good - it looks like motor oil going on. I agree that thorough rinsing may be the issue though.. a dash (just a dash or she'll smell like a potato cake) of vinegar in the final rinse would certainly help eliminate scurf. Quickasyoucan
Very stupid question here but does it blacken them? Or just make the coat shiny? And does it cover greys! No I am serious about the first 2 questions

No I am serious about the first 2 questions I've not seen it do much more other than decrease any reddish tinge (which is why the white enhancers work too). The Groomers one is excellent for shine. How often do you bath and brush? The flaky black pugs I have seen are ones that haven't been brushed or bathed for ages. Could also be diet related. Danois
Second the Equinade Go Black but I have had even better results (and nicer coat) with Chris Christensen Black on Black. It neutralises brown/ red tones. I also use the Mr Groom spray - mink oil, Vit E and sunscreen most days. I got mine from an online show supply shop but I have also seen them at the show supply van at Erskine Park.

I can't agree with that, we would average one show a month and yes the blacks will "flake", sometimes it helps if they are washed a few days before, sometimes a spray with plain water before going into the ring helps. Very rarely do I use shampoos on the dogs coats just the hydrobath and essential oils and still we will flake. It may be that at this time of the year the dogs coats are changing and the skin is a bit dryer. i've never found any of the mentioned products have worked significantly for me???? Thanx but I doubt either of those factors are whats happening here, I think the oatmeal shampoo is just drying her out too much!!!

Clyde
I use Champion Tails whitening shampoo for horses on all coloured dogs and the results are amazing. It is also cheap as chips. Just be aware that some of these shampoos contain soap and will therefore strip out flea/tick preventatives.
