I let the dogs choose, but I prefer wooden dumbells as I tend to zap my dogs with static electricity with the plastic ones. The other reason is that I can get a wooden d/b to fit my dogs mouth better as they can be made to order with different size bits/ends ect. I was helping someone who owned a chi x who couldn't see with the plastic ones but when she got one made just for her, Bingo she was much happier

Also on this subject how many people teach their dogs to return over the solid jump no matter where the dumbell lands?

I've always taught our dogs to return over the solid jump no matter where the dumbell is. I find also it helps that because I do agility with my dogs they learn to jump the jump on an angle and not only straight on.

Hi, it's been good watching everybody else's video clip. Thought I would put one on my little coolie Gabby from the Royal Show last year

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCmHMK2aCGg

Thats was a tough assignment and a great achievement for Gabby. The area she competed in had been used by the show dogs for the previous few days and there were lots of food and dog droppings all over the place. Sideshow alley was just outside the door and you had the crowd just outside the ring. A great round by a baby dog. Well done.

Thanks for that Ptolomy.

We just went with a small hiccup the other week at a trial. Couldnt focus in the heelwork and in the stand for exam fell in love with the rottie next door and moved her feet LOL . Didnt think of proofing about rotties and being in love LOL. Find out this weekend when we go to Mount Gambier and hopefully its not raining otherwise have no hope. (doesnt like the rain)

I usually use the plactic dumbell as I have had a wooded dumbell split in half in a trial when I threw it LOL but my baby Gabby doesnt like the plastic one as she finds it too heavy in her mouth. I have taught all my dogs whereever the dumbell lands you go over pick it up and come back over the jump so they have all learnt to come straight back. I do try to stay back a fair bit but I do have problems trying to get the dumbel to go straight and a distance and not hit the jump LOL.

Okay, so I just did a dumbbell session with Jedi - he turns to the right every time! Fancy that! Is where I throw it important without a jump, or should I just be worried about that sort of thing later?

I also tend to stand much further back from the jump than most when I throw the dumbbell - as I like to give my kids plenty of room before they have to take off, and enough room to align themselves for a straight present.

I second that! How many people do you see at trials standing way too close to the jump, causing crooked fronts/refusals etc, because they are scared of the dog going around the jump.

So do most dogs pick the dumbbell up on the way out, or do they scoop it up on the way back?

Mine all go around the back of the dumbbell and scoop it up on the way back to me.

I've noticed with my young goldie who I've only just started to do dumbell with turns to the right and scoops it up while he is turning.

Though last night he did manage to fall over in his hurry to turn grab the dumbell and get back to me all at the speed of light....

I can't believe the number of bad dumbbell throwers there are and the more they try and throw correctly the worse they get

So do most people hurl their dumbbell or do you tend to lob it just the required distance?

I'm a hurler :)

Last time I threw my dumbbell I caught it in my coat and it hit me on the head  Very embarrassing

Apologies, but.. :hitself: !!!!

I just toss it and it lands wherever it lands... :) Definitely something I need to work on now! I'll add it to the list of things the handler needs to work on!! :o

With my border collie I tended to lob it just far enough. She was one that would only go a short distance. With my goldie I'm teaching him that it doesn't matter how far I throw it he has to go get it so I'm hurling his dumbbell.

As for hurling or lobbing depends if your trialling at the Royal with class windows directly in front of where you are suppose to throw the DB :) . The judge did say if you broke one and the dog still retrieved it you could get bonus marks  .

Last year at the Broadmeadows trial, I was unable to use my nylon dumbell, so had to use my lighter wooden one.

The wind was blowing so hard that when I thew it, almost went behind me! Keep your throws low and flat on windy days!

I let the dog decide re: dumbbells too. Jedi wouldn't take the plastic one into his mouth so I had to get a wood one... But now he knows what he's supposed to do he doesn't care whether it's wood or plastic. Ahsoka's not fussy! She even tried to pick up Zero's (Shell's husky) dumbbell which is WAY too big for her! Poor thing could hardly carry it but she wasn't going to let that stop her! Personally, I like the wood ones. Aesthetically pleasing. :hitself:

Lol - you should've seen Zero with Jedi's!! It was so insanely cute i think i want to get him a smaller one!

I guess a lot of your aren't there yet - BUT when you do all get to open :) will it be........

the broad jump

or

change of positions

and why?

Broad jump - he already seems to know what to do with it and I haven't taught him. He just loves jumping and will wait till i tell him he can jump. His change of positions tend to be a little sluggish. I need a second dog to play them off against each other!

I choose to do COP, so it will be an easier transition to the UD work. Bit of a useless exercise Broadjump IMO. There is nothing much like it further down the track.

Probably change of positions for me, as I've already been teaching that for a while and haven't the access to a broad jump for training!

Ptolomy, with all this dumbbell retrieve talk it's scaring me, so I'm gonna have to bail you up one day and get you to pick our retrieve to pieces while it's still in training mode so I can get rid of bad habits quick smart!

Not that I'm there yet but I have taught Bosco both and will most likely do change of position however will just see on the day when I get to the trial.
