As the topic suggests I am after a bit of guideance as to when it is safe to allow puppies to be around other dogs. My vet has suggested 10 days after the 16 week vac but I thought that was quite late.

Can anyone give me some help.

Thanks in advance.

I have always waited untill 2 weeks after the 16 week vac. Better to be safe

Many people do not give the third injection - only give the 2nd at 12 weeks. Whether you need to wait another week after that is also personal choice.

Your puppy should still be socialised before the vaccination cycle is complete - at puppy pre-school, in backyards etc - just use a bit of common sense and not take them to dog parks or areas heavily populated by dogs.

The time before 16 weeks is critical for the development of your puppy.

I had a long, in-depth conversation with the animal behaviouralist at the Uni Vet Clinic about this topic several years ago & I agree pretty much with her philosophy which was that this was a trade off between the health of the puppy vs social development and that it is sooooo very important to socialise the puppy as early as possible that it almost precludes worrying about the possibility of the pup picking up parvo. or the like.

What I have opted for with any puppies that I breed and run on is that after their first immunisation at 6wks I start to take them out to see the world at 8weeks but do not allow them to walk on the ground.

They have another immunisation at 12 weeks and I then take them to Puppy Preschool and on walks in areas that are not heavily visited by other dogs that may not be immunised.

At 16 weeks after their final C5 immunisation they can walk anywhere.

It is worth noting that I start socialising my litters from 4wks of age to get them used to various loud noises and kitchen sounds. They travel in the car & walk with me around our property from about 5-6 wks.

If you are going to socalise your puppy earlier make sure it is with other dogs that you know are healthy and vaccinated and in a location that you know does not have any diseases.

Thanks for all of your replies. I have been socialising my boy with my sisters dog who is fully vaccinated and he has been on lots of car rides and comes to my parents house and he is currently going to puppy preschool

I have been wondering the same thing. We live on a property and so it's even more important to us that our pups are socialised in lots of other places and intended on carrying them around now that they've had their first vac but as we live so far out of town, what should we do at toilet time? They have to go on the ground then! Any advice would be nice?

Thanks

Z

So if my pup had her first vaccination at 6 weeks, will she get the 2nd at 10 weeks? Then I can take her out maybe 2 weeks after that?

it's up to you how you feel comfertable...

i take pup out at 8 weeks... nothing like dog parks, beachs or whatever.. but car rides, puppy school, supermarkets and friends places... i like to social him at a young age.

I take mine out from when they come home at 8weeks

I carry them and only let them down to socialise at houses that i know are safe with dogs i know are safe

I feel that early socialisation is far too important to not do because of vaccinations.

It is up to each person to make the decision that is right for them.

We had our puppy meeting other dogs by 12 weeks but only because we didnt get a chance to see other dogs before hand. Our vet said that she was fine to start socialising with other dogs before that we knew were fully vaccinated before but not to places like a public park until her final vaccine had kicked in (puppy school was also fine as you will find that most puppy schools will not let you attend unless your puppy is vaccinated). With our pup, our vet suggested the C5 at 12 weeks that can be given nasally instead of by injection which meant that she didn't have to go back when she was 16 weeks and could go in public sooner.

hope this helps! :)
