Grooming Your Dog

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hey guys how would you train your dog to lie on its side so you can groom it easily and any tips on getting your dog to Love grooming? thanks

Nooki loves the attention so she's easy!!

Asher isnt big on grooming, but he will remain on the ground if i ask him too.

Try treating your dog while it is laying down and you're brushing it, while at the same time letting it know its a good dog!

Asher will stay longer for me, even without treats, if i praise his good behaviour.

Otherwise..... run the legs off your mutt then when you get home and it is buggered, you can brush it!

ETA - im not a professional, just a regular doggie lover so hopefully you will get some proper tips from the others who know more

Start with a soft brush & light strokes with some food treats ready. Do a little every day & never hurt the dog.

My cat hates being groomed & I can only get a few strokes in while she's sleeping. Tilba isn't fussed on being brushed/combed either. She doesn't mind too much her back & sides but go near her tail & she runs away.

agree lots of short sessions.

Lots of cuddles and LOTS of treats.

Make him want to hop on the grooming table!

Slowly make sessions longer and don't force him into positions he does not like until he is ready.

He will eventually lay down for you, he just needs to relax

How old is your dog?

I used lots of treats when training my puppies to stay still while grooming. But what worked the best was giving them a message before grooming :)

Now they love being groomed. But it did take a while. Till about five months of age, my elkhound used to try and wriggle away, or run, or do anything but stay still!!!
