4 Paws
Noticed my foxie licking his front dew claw area and discovered he's actually ripped his dew claw off and looks like there is only the quick left. The outer casing of the nail is just hanging on and he's licking it a lot.Is there anything I can do once he removes the nail itself from all the licking to the quick, should it be covered?I'd imagine it would be very sensitive till a new casing grows over it? any suggestions? Teebs
oh, this is something i know If the nail is totally off, just bandage for 24 hours, to keep clean, if the nail is still there and the dog does not remove it, it will need to be taken out Anti bios are usually started, and maybe pain killers I had Atlas on pain killers for his, but kaos seemed ok with hers, so i didnt worry - Atlas ended up having both dew claws removed (operations, they wont grow back), he was out of action for 2 weeks, kaos was up and about like nothing had happened 2 days later, but hers was just pulled out and will grow back Vet also did the same when Atlas ripped two normal nails, bandage for 2 days, pain killers and Anti bois, those nails also grew back I hate dew claws Edited March 28, 2009 by Terrorbull
Erny
4 Paws. I don't really know, sorry. However in the absence of a quick (pun intended ) answer (because it's fairly quiet in here with the MDBA Choice Awards happening), I'd be inclined to wrap it once the nail comes away - assuming that won't be very long away - to save it from further damage and pain. When you wrap it though, you don't want to have the bandage sticking to it when you need to change it. So perhaps a bit of gauze?? Sounds very ouchy. Poor dog. ETA: Oh good. I see TB has given an answer . Cheers! Edited March 28, 2009 by Erny
persephone
You will need to remove the rest of the nail... the rest will heal quite quickly once the nail is gone. You will probably need to visit the vet, if you're not comfortable ripping it off quickly yourself ! leaving it hanging will keep it being more painful. We have working dogs... who do this often.wash it well with saline, or betadine... and see a vet if you're worried. Don't let him lick at it constantly.... I don't believe in bandaging.... altho I am in the minority
Teebs
sorry, just read that the nail is still there! I left kaos, crated her the night and vets the next day. Hers was in a way, that you couldnt bandage it without causing a heap of pain, it had twisted and was sticking up towards her head. The dog at work that did it (boss's dog, not a border!) we left him for a few days, and he never managed to get the nail off, the vet also had to remove it, as did one of their other dogs god i am bad luck when it comes to dogs nails! i didnt like bandaging either.. but i didnt like blood through my house thankfully the bleeding stopped by the time the bandage was removed! persephone
I've done that before - rip it off, saline wash, dab of betadine - done yep. When Hamlet rips a 'normal' nail.. and it doesn't come off completely.. I get him to run after a rabbit, or another dog.. so he will rip it off on the lawn or something.... he is so full of adrenaline he doesn't feel it, that way! then it gets washed and betadined and I apply a drop or two of deterrent to stop the infernal licking.... 4 Paws
thankyou for your suggestions. I will give him till tomorrow to see if he can get it off himself,if not I'll try and get it off if he will let me.Unfortunately he does not like the vets at all and generally has to be muzzled to have his vaccanations so I'm hoping this will not lead to a vet visit
persephone
I will give him till tomorrow to see if he can get it off himself, poor little thing is going to have a very uncomfortable night! That loose nail will be annoying the heck out of him... getting hooked on things, and hurting..... try muzzling him.. wrapping him in a towel if you have no one to help... grab the nail in pliers or a gauze swab.. and clip the thread thru.. with nail clippers... it may not be weak enough for you to pull off cleanly...
