JulesP
Well just over a year since I started this thread and today Poppy got her Started title. She got a 95 (&1st) and a 93. Much better runs than her first go at Started. I'm pretty pleased considering I only planned to do HT with her. Maybe I'll do some training for Intermediate Thanks for all the encouragement from you guys too! Edited June 5, 2010 by JulesP

Awesome work Jules and the gorgeous Poppy.... and lovely that I finally got to meet you after all this time. Poppy worked beautifully and that 2nd run was to die for. Your win was well deserved, good on you both. ... and how was that weather??!! we were the lucky ones to have got our classes over before it came down Hope you got dry and warm last night. It took me hrs to stop shivering :D I reckon you should keep going too ;) Edited June 5, 2010 by dyzney

JulesP
Thanks guys. Not sure what to do next - try ducks, B course or train for intermediate? What do you suggest? Oh and Dyzney is being super modest as she scored 97 to win the other started round. She also got a another good pass. So well on the way to her started title. We just got home from presentation... thrilled to say that Dyzney's 97 was Course A High Score in Trial. Dunno Jules, I am super familiar with how Poppy works. I know I will be going on to do Started Course B, but it is not at the State Trial, except on Ducks  I want to do ducks, but will wait til after the duck clinic me thinks. So for now I will concentrate on getting this title first.

Did someone video it - I would love to see a rotti working and it sounds like she works them well. Congratulations.
Starkehre
No Piper. No video. But funny you should mention that... after the judge from Tas judged our first run, I spotted him with a video camera at the ready to get Dyzney's 2nd run. Of course I wouldn't have seen it anyway, but the funny part was that our 2nd run was so disastrous that he probably erased it anyway he would have been disappointed cause he was so excited to see Dyzney (a Rotti) work, that he obviously wanted some footage to take home with him, and we mucked up  Perhaps I will try and get a video some time and post it. Just ask Huski, she'll tell ya, I don't do video.
JulesP
Another clinic today and I had a go at B Course!! I was pleased with Poppy. She did the pen and the panels well just need to work at lengthening the cast. Did some setting of sheep too and some rounding up of naughty escaping sheep, that was really good and seemed to give her a heap of confidence. I sort of felt like we were actually working the sheep today rather than just playing. Did any of you guys go to the comp today?

And yes - there's nothing quite like real work to give human and dog confidence .
piper
Jazz and I trialled on sheep today. She isn't ready for intermediate so I put her in started again but set her up most of the way back to C and did not go past B myself. I also got her to do some small bursts of driving - not a lot. Sh shut down a bit when we were training it the other week and hates the sheep getting past me so we worked on letting them move past me and stopping her before she felt the need to head them back to me. Each time she let them past me and walked in a step or 2 without heading I would then release her to go around as a reward. Will keep trying it when we get the chance and extending the distance and duration. Even with our mucking abbout with a longer cast and star of driving she got high in trial with 90. I know what you mean Jules about the real work and not just playing. I have a lot of fun in the yards and stock setting or moving the mobs around. Today we worked the yards after her run and got toally caked in mud (I mean CAKED - it was several inches deep in most areas, some places Jazz would not even walk over) but had a good time and it really has helped her to build confidence in confined spaces. Today she even went for an appropriate nose grab with a ewe standing its ground in the pens - didn't touch but air snapped just infront of the nose which was so barve for her. 12 months ago she would have left if stood up in a small space. We also rotated the mob around as needed and collected them back out of the paddock after our lunch break and moved them through several small paddocks to the PT area. I think proper jobs seem to make a difference with settling the dogs. Tomorrow is duck day 2 runs for the day and I don't expect to have such a good brag due to handler impairment issues, lol. I find the best way to teach a long cast is to backward chain it. In B you want the dog to go deep in the cast so they can walk up on their sheep and lift them quietly (something we don't do as well as we should). If you teach the deep top first the extend the lenghth and breadth and you should get a nice wide deep cast. Once the cast is shaped the extra lenghth for intermediate and advanced just come easily. We trained shedding again today and managed to shed twice nicely admittedly using 7 sheep not 3 or 5. Shedding must be the hardest bthing I have ever tried to teach a dog. Janba
I like stock handling and doing real work. Cole is a much better working dog than he is a trial dog.
JulesP
Congrats on your score Piper We successfully penned 3 times and I don't think I would have lost any points the last time we did it. So it really is just the cast. What she does is run for a couple of steps and she goes into the stalk. If the sheep don't move she stops going forwards. If they start moving she picks them up. Not really surprising seeing as she likes the sheep not moving. The hold bit went well  I did some work with Amber too and she is so different. She likes the sheep moving and happily got them out of a corner. She also fetches the sheep to me and is happy to go the length of a HT yard to pick sheep up. I hope I don't stuff her up! Dova
Only 5 weeks to go until the herding clinic with Trudy Viklund & I'm excited , yeah I know it's a bit early to be getting this excited but I'll be to busy concentrating while I'm driving over there . If any of you see someone with white knuckles & face looking lost in Melbourne on the 6th of August, just give me a cino & point me in the right direction & I'll be fine . Janba
We had our first sheep trial for the yaer today and Coole got his first advanced A pass with 84 He stuffed up the cast and split his sheep (too much shedding practice :D) so lost 9 points there and 3 on the z shute because the sheep were reluctant to go to go in with the new black plastic but we lost 0 points on the centre line gates which is where we have been having problems. I am so pleased with my boy.
