JulesP
Thanks Janba. I haven't watched a Started trial so don't have any idea of distances. ie how far the sheep will be from the post. I am going to watch the State trial. Any one else going?? Having trouble getting her to go along the fence. That is mainly what I practiced today. She so badly wants to put the sheep on the fence! And I am feeling anxious because I can't walk up with her in the cast.

With the dog on B and if you walk up to A, you are about 5m away from the sheep so the cast is not long at all and you are in a good position to prevent the dog crossing and provide a draw for the sheep. JulesP
Trying to teach Poppy to cast around a rubbish bin at present, lol. It is interesting to see her limit on how far away she will go from me. Just need to stretch it out. Anyone going to the Vic state trial???? I want to go and watch. ness
Oh figure 8's around cones . Can do that and Kenzie just works herself up at the mere thought of playing it . And Dova stop bragging about going herding tomorrow otherwise your just asking for it . Edited August 4, 2009 by ness
Dova
I've been teaching my two to do a figure of 8 & going over a jump in the middle, to go out more I use "off" & tap my stick on the ground, then lots of praise for any movement out, does that make sense . Another thing I've been told is don't look at the front of your dog, look & point the stick/hand behind to encourage them to go forward, If they're going clockwise I'll say "away" & move the stick behind & "off" to get them out more. Well don't know if that's any use at all , but keep trying it will only get better, we don't do agility the jump is just for fun.
ness
My worry would be that Kenzie circles her cones very tightly and takes a very direct line but also very fast and actually accelerates her self around the cone (or jump if I play with 2 jumps). Not sure what that would translate on stock as from my very basic understanding is that you want a calm outrun and not have the dog bust straight up the middle. My only experience with attempting to teach directions off stock was with Ness who likes to rush stock anyway so it never really came to much other than a training exercise teaching her to circle objects for the hell of it. JulesP
I am mainly aiming to get Poppy to go away from me. It is like she is on an elastic band. She goes a couple of meters and then turns back. Even when the sheepies are there. Also a pain in agility. Poppy doesn't run in a straight line! She is always running on a curve. So she is doing a nice curve around the bin. She also doesn't like going along the fence so I am going to put the bin near the fence and get her to go inbetween the bin and fence. Might not translate to anything useful when the sheep are present but will be useful to have a go away command for agility.
ness
Fair enough JulesP I know Piper suggested the sending around table bit for Ness before we went for a lesson and I guess I have inadvertantly taught Kenzie something similar. Just wasn't sure what would happen given she has more natural herding ability then Ness or at least its been fostered at a younger age then Ness's was. JulesP
I am doing the go away training as outlined in the Moe something or other Agility Foundation dvd. Started it more for agility as I can't get a rear cross in due to the dogs not wanting to go out in front of me.

JulesP
Humph don't think this is going to work. Go around (the bin) obviously means go around the bin!! Which does not translate into anything else.
ness
JulesP I know with Ness I just did it around lots of things - trees at the park, anything so it would generalise and it did help when she went on sheep the second time as first time she didn't really want to leave me. Obviously no long term results and we never continued. We are just back from our walk at the park and my little Kenzie ratbag decided a couple of ducks in the creek needed moving. Hmm she was chest deep in water staring at them and they obligued and move on to the bank . Obviously that evil eye is intimidating . Jules, As with anything else the dog will learn to generalse. I clicker trained a go around in either direction,. I think I used a foot stool to begin with and then I gradually used bigger and bigger things. But if she is stuck on it use another small object that you can lure around so that she generalises the command to be go around the indicated item in x direction. Dova
This weekend Izzi & Pebbles are doing their first started course in herding, we're having a lesson tomorrow & bring the sheep home Friday, so we don't have to get up at 4am Saturday. I've got this awful feeling I'm going to fail miserably , Know the dogs can do it but I just can't seem stand in the right place to get the sheep through the obstacle ;). I'm going to get a huge piece of the gooiest chocolate cake from my favorite cake shop to drown my sorrows Saturday night with a . Does anyone mind if I do the whole drama queen bit on here Sunday, think before you say it's ok . Edited August 23, 2009 by Dova

Good luck but remember not to stand as the sheep go through the obstacle but to keep moving to act as a draw for the sheep.

You'll have plenty of time for lessons, there's no more trials till next year , the October one's been cancelled I think. Geez Janba where did you come from, you slipped in before I finished , thanks, any tips are appreciated . Edited August 17, 2009 by Dova
ness
Yep I know the October one has been cancelled due to the new heat policy. I did want to enter this one as there is a WA judge but never mind not going to happen until next year now ;) . Still trying to find time for a lesson.
