TerraNik
Armahani are the Lappies that I know!Didn't you do a stop and recall TerraNik?? For my HIC we did the stop and recall at the beginning. Walked down to the sheep on lead, let the dogs off lead and pretty much did a HT. A couple of dogs stayed on lead. You don't have to go off lead to pass. We did the sit, stay, recall it at the beginning but I cut it out of the video because it's kinda boring!
Janba
What is the purpose of the long piece of doweling?I understand that there is a rule in ANKC herding that only doweling can be used but surely this should not be the case with inexperienced dogs. Why does this rule exist??? Isn't a length of poly pipe safer????? The rules state 2.8.2 Handlers and Judges may carry a staff or crook which shall be wooden, bamboo, cane, plastic or afibreglass stock stick and not longer than approximately 1.65 metres. PVC and poly plastic pipe is not permissible in the arena. The staff or crook is intended as an aid in controlling livestock as a visual aid to signal a command to the dog and not as a training device and shall never be used to touch the dog, except in an extreme situation involving the safety of a person or the livestock. The reason they don't allow poly pipe is that if the handler bashes it on the ground it does make a loud noise. Some handlers have the habit of bashing the stick on the ground to emphasise their commands which should incur a penalty. A lot of handlers seem to use dressage whips and lunging whips with the ends cut off. I personally use a short bamboo stick - the current one is the 18 inches that would be allowable in 3 sheep. The rules are in place for trialling not training. There is nothing to stop you using poly pipe or a rake etc in training your dog but ideally once you start trialling you should have enough control that the stick is just an extension of your arm. JulesP
Poly pipe sure does make a noise when you whack it on the bum of a naughty horse Herding clinic this weekend.
Dova
Woohoo just got an email from the Kippakoop people & they're having a school in Millicent, SA, in july, Ive never done a school before so I'll have to hide the nerve's & just do it . It'll be worth it just to see how Izzi would do, think she's going to be herder & Pebbles will be better at obedience.
TerraNik
Good luck and have fun! We were supposed to take our two dogs herding training this weekend, but my lappie has just come into season, so that rules her out!!! I might just take my keeshond. JulesP
Another good clinic. Did a couple of PT runs, which went well. Also had a go at doing a started obstacle, which we did, faint! Poppy worked better out in a bigger paddock. Got through the gates with no real issues and penned the sheepies. She isn't that fussed if she looses a sheep, so need to work on that. Think it is because she is so focused that she just doesn't realize. Asked about the poly pipe but no one really seemed to know the 'whys' of it. Dova my instructor was your judge at your HIC trial Good day. Am stuffed. The sheepies knocked me over too, that was rather embarrassing!
Dova
Dova my instructor was your judge at your HIC trial Good day. Am stuffed. The sheepies knocked me over too, that was rather embarrassing! It's taken a while to answer this, I've been tossing onions to earn some bucks to pay for the working dog school in July, now where was I , oh yeah, I had two judges at the HIC trial, both were very good. The one who judged Izzi bred Pebbles, she stayed after the trial & gave a few lessons as well, she was great, sounds like you had a good time. This herding stuff sure gets you in doesn't it, all I think about is when the next training session is & can't wait for the working dog school in July, I gotta get a life . Dova
It is the one that stayed to give lessons :p I think I am boring the crap out of people now with my herding talk We need to get together, at least we'll be leaving the rest of the population alone , you should do the Millicent training weekend I've heard it's very good, depending on where you live of course. Dova
Have to have tell everyone about our training session yesterday, can you see my smile , took Izzi out first & did a PT work out, the instructor said after, it was good enough to get high score at a trial , I know that would depend on how well other dog's worked etc. but it made me feel pretty damn good. Izzi has proved she doesn't need me out there, she does the job & I'm just an accessory . Pebbles is coming along very well too she's gathering the sheep now, not just chasing, she's a typical Aussie & I have to learn how to work her, so proud of both my girls. We're getting ready for the july 4th trial, it's only my second one & I'm madly trying to learn what I'll have to do :D , getting ready for us includes converting the stallion yard into a sheep yard, organising a roll of hay & feed troughs & booking the trailer, the sheep are coming to our place the week before & we're taking them to the trial then back then back to their home after. Think I'm hooked on this herding stuff, I'm even enjoying converting yards & transporting sheep, should I be seeing a profesional about this . ness
I so want to go herding but the next training day clashes with an agility trial and trying to madly finish off titles so will go there instead.

If I don't pass on the 4th my instructor will hit me with something big & heavy , so I'm trying to start Izzi & Pebbles titles, good luck with the agility title. JulesP
Thanks Strangely I don't feel the same angst about herding as I do about agility and obedience. Probably why I am enjoying it so much. I have a test at dog school the day after herding and I am really freaking out about that!
Dova
Going for my PT In June! It's June, when's the trial, it's weeks before ours & I can't wait. Just heard from Pages Working Dogs, WOOHOO, they're having another school & hopefully I'll get to go . Must be good, people from QLD have booked places, that's a long way for a dog school . JulesP
Next weekend! I have only had 1 lesson doing PT stuff so don't hold out much hope. Think I will view it as a training day rather than a trial.
Dova
Next weekend! I have only had 1 lesson doing PT stuff so don't hold out much hope. Think I will view it as a training day rather than a trial. All trials are training days, go out there to pass & the dog will pick up on your confidence. I'm not having a shot at you, I wrecked what could have been a nice obedience work out just because I'd had some bad news the day before & just didn't want to be there. Pebbles always gives it her best but that time she just wouldn't work, so get out there & pass no excuses & I want to hear all the good news on Monday .
