Eye Problem

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I was alerted yesterday from a friend who came to visit, on a peculiar black spot In my lil Staffy's eye,

she noticed It while she was standing in the sun,

It looks just like another pupil a little smaller and situated under her pupil in the Iris area ??

Thought I'd post to see If anyone else has experienced this or may know what It Is,

Much appreciated, I have an enormous vet bill from another dog with cancer, so was hoping

that It may not be something serious, and I could hold off a vet visit, unless otherwise

Thanks again

Without seeing your dog it sounds like Pigmentary Keratitis which is basically scar tissue.

This can be caused by entropion (eyelids rolling inwards and irritating the eye), dry eye or a healed ulcer.

If your dog has either entropion or dry eye that has caused this keratitis then I would be looking into treatment such as surgery to make the eyelids smaller and eyedrops as it is likely that it will continue to get worse. If it is a healed ulcer that has caused the keratitis then it wont get any larger and you could look at eyedrops to remove/reduce it if you so desired.

How old is she?

If the area that you are seeing is within the eye itself, it's unlikely to be pigmentary keratitis as this affects the cornea.

From your description its difficult to say what it could be, but possibly a melanotic lesion or any other process that affects the iris, such as iris atrophy or synechiae. It is very hard to tell without seeing it and it is worth a check up if it concerns you. Does it move around the as the pupil constricts and dilates?
