Macks Mum
Hi all! My Poodle (Mini) has a problem with his nails splitting from the front back to the quick, they then tear away from the nail bed. As you can imagine this is so painful for him. I have clipped the broken pieces off as close as possible to the quick but I am quite worried about him. I am wondering if he is deficient in his diet. My other Poodle (Standard) has good nails - they both eat the same meals. Raw meat and veg, chicken wings/necks, occasional sardines, yoghurt. I would really appreciate any suggestions or shared experiences.
poodlefan
I'd be discussing the possiblity of symmetrical lupoid onychodystrophy with your vet. This does occur in the breed and leads to the nail issues you are describing. In the meantime, I suggest the addition of flaxseed or fish oil to your boy's diet. If it is SLO, this will help. Tenties
One of my girls has something like this but my vet said it was a nail bed disease, her nails "Drop off " then grow again. You can alway's tell when one is coming off as she licks and chews at it non stop. Linda...
