Puppy Vaccinations

Our lab puppy received a vaccination at 6 weeks and then we brought him home with us just past his 7 weeks birthday. On the vaccination sheet, it says she is to get another shot at 10 weeks, 13 weeks and then at 16 weeks. I was always under the impression that they were to get three shots, not four. I have an appt. at my vets on Wednesday and he said she should be vaccinated again as if she had never been in the first place. I am not sure whether she should have this shot again or move on to the second one. Anyone else ever been through this and what did you do. The shot she had was the Canine Distemper, Adenovirus Type 2, Parinfluenza and the Parvovirus Vaccine.

Vaccinating again now will give her no immunity as she was only vaccinated a week ago

I recommend vaccinting at 6-10 weeks, 10-14 weeks and 14-18 weeks

Each Vaccination should be given 4 week apart

Then again at 1 year, 3 years, 5 years

Puppys from reputable breeders do not leave for their new homes untill they are at least 8 weeks of age.

Puppy vaccinations are:

7 weeks

12 weeks

16 weeks

Many believe that if a puppy is vaccinated before the age of 7 weeks the vaccination has no affect as the puppies immune system is not developed enough to start producting antibodies in reaction to the injection. This is probably why your vet has told you that your puppy should be treated as if thye have not been vaccinated at all.

Edited because I am going nutty.

When my son found our kitten abandoned the vet vaccinated not long after, she was about 3 w/o when found. When she was having her 3rd vaccination the vet said it I'd waited an extra week for the 1st one she would only have had to have 2 instead of 3. But as we didn't know where she came from it was suggested to do her younger at the 1st. Can't remember now how old she was as it was over 2 yrs ago.

Sounds like the vet may want to get an extra consult fee from you :(

Only need 3 vaccinations, not 4. Why over-vaccinate?? No need!

Immunity is developed after the 2nd vaccination.

There is also a new brand of vaccinations that only require 2 shots....I forget the name.

Her first shot was 3 weeks ago (Feb. 25, 09) but she was only 6 and bit weeks old, that's why my vet wants to do it over again, said it's better for her immune system. I'm not paying anything extra for the office visit since it's her first one with this vet anyways. I just didn't want to give her a shot if it could do any harm.

Just 'cause I haven't posted for ten minutes or so......

The 'open book test' you have to complete to get a affix has a question about the age to vaccinate pups with 6 weeks being the right answer according to the accompanying 'information for breeders'. Of course I ticked the 6 weeks box - I wouldn't even think of doing it that early............ (getting an affix after shifting countries)

Time to find a new vet

I agree. How is assulting her immune system with more vaccinations than necessary "better for her immune system"? And yes, it most certainly could do her harm.

(just incase I sound terse, I am definately not having a go at you martymonty, well done for asking the question and not just 'going along' with what the vet says even if it doesnt feel right. My frustration is wholy directed at vets that give this sort of advice)

So I took Harley to the vets last night and he said he would just do the second puppy vaccine since she was at least 6 weeks when she had the first one, so I was very glad to hear that. Now she will just need the third shot plus the rabies shot (not sure if they are given as one needle or not) The vet was very pleased with Harleys' disposition, so think we are on the right track. She had put on just under 5 lbs. in 3 weeks so I was thrilled with that. Thank you for all your advice and I'm glad this worked out in the end.

Rabies shot? which country are you from?

On Vaccinations i think you will find it depends on which BRAND of vaccinations you vet uses , to the number needed and the length between.
