Sheridan
One of my dogs is coughing, a sort of hollow breathing sound. He had a bone this afternoon. No cough. He had dinner. No cough. Then he came inside, checked out Min's bed and started this funny coughing sound. It's not constant but I don't know what it could be other than something he's breathed in that got caught in his throat. He had a drink, which didn't clear it. He doesn't seem to be in pain, a little uncomfortable maybe (i.e. he's down at my feet and not harassing me to play). Suggestions? Ideas? Just don't know what he could have swallowed. puggy_puggy
What sort of bone? Hard or soft. I suppose it could have irritated him throat if he had a piece that was to big and didn't go down properly. Could also be that he swallowed an ant/bee/wasp etc that was hanging around the bone and it has irriated his throat. Or maybe even dust from outside has irritated it. If he doesn't seem to be in any breathing distress I would wait and see. You could perhaps give an antihistamine tablet to help with any swelling if he has swallowed a nasty. Ravyk
could be the start of kennel cough, my dog contracted kennel cough and it sounded like she had something lodged in her throat. Took her to the vet thinking the latter and he diagnosed her with KC

Sheridan
What's the incubation period for KC? He hasn't been anywhere for the past week, though I was at a show yesterday and did meet various dogs. KC can be on clothes, I think? He seems to have stopped coughing now but still seems down. He's currently doing a polar bear rug impersonation.
Golden Rules
Incubation period is two weeks isn't it? Don't know if it can be carried on clothes though, don't think so. eta - have you got some Manuka Honey? If so, give him a teaspoon two or three times a day. If not, ordinary honey will at least relieve a sore throat. Edited February 28, 2009 by ~ArtyFarty~

Ravyk
we reckon she got it from the RSPCA-we took her to meet a dog we were interested in adopting. She started coughing occasionally a few days later, then it got worse and she was at the vets about 1 1/2 - 2 weeks after the intial visit to the RSPCA. It could be different in different dogs and with different strains of KC Edited February 28, 2009 by Ravyk
Sheridan
Hmmm. well, he hasn't coughed for a few hours and is occasionally playing with his cuz ball. The test will be how interested he's going to be in my dinner.
Nicole...
We had the same thing with Lomani shortly before Christmas. Started as an occasional cough then got a bit more frequent over the first 2 days. Took her to the vet thinking she had something in her throat (as the first cough happened with a meal), but he diagnosed KC (no sign of anything stuck in her throat and her tonsils were inflamed). He said the incubation period on it was between 5 and 20 days (which had us puzzled as she had had exposure to other dogs only at 22 days prior and 3 days prior so no idea how she got it). LoveisGolden
Might be a bit late and hopefully your dog is ok now. When my dog was coughing like he had something stuck in his throat I fed him a couple of pieces of diced fresh meet to dislodge whatever it was that was stuck. This seems to have worked the couple of times that its happened and will hopefully it will work for you and its not something like kennel cough. Sheridan
Thanks all. He's fine today, no cough, not down at all. He's just killed a soft toy so he's feeling much better.
