LeeJane
My STaffie pup is 14 weeks old. For the past 1 week, she threw up aevery second day at 6:30am, she threw up at the same time every second morning. She didn't throw up much, maybe just one teaspoon of some white liquid and some bits there that I couldn't figure out because she licked them so quick that I didn't have a chance to touch them. She is currently eating a mixture of dry food (Hills Science), raw chicken neck (maybe 3-4 times a week @ dinner) and some steam carrot/sweet potato/pumpkin (only 2-3 times a week). She started chewing on pig ears on Monday, I am not sure if that's the reason she is vomitting because she chew of pork hide, big puppy bones (from City Farmers) and didn't have any problems. I am thinking of taking her to the vet in a couple of hours when the vet gets in, but I just thought I will ask here to see if that's common? This is my first puppy thank you
LeeJane
I forgot to add, I did read some posts about dog vomitting. My pup vomits first thing she wakes up, and I read somewhere that it could be the acid is upsetting the stomach. So I guess I shall try giving her soem food before bed time? persephone
If she is happy and eating- and ONLY does the early morning vomit... try giving her a meal just before bed time, and see. Also , instead of pigs' ears or rawhide- give a large raw meaty bone like roo tail or lamb brisket. or ... try turkey wings maybe? I had a pup who used to wake me with a vomit-- changed his mealtime and he was fine.
Mystiqview
how long has it been going on? Where does she sleep at night? Inside/outside? does she stay in one area the whole night (ie crate).. Does she vomit when she wakes up when sleeping during the day? how big are her meals.. maybe make them smaller but more frequent. Could be acid, although to me I dont think it would make a difference on whether the dog is awake or asleep.. It is still the same time between meals so acid would build up regardless of whether the dog is awake or asleep. What do you do when she vomits? Do you go rushing to her or leave her be and quietly clean up the mess? If you rush to her.. I would suggest just keeping a cool eye on her without making a fuss, just incase it is now a learnt behaviour. She may have had a stomach upset ages ago, but your reaction when she vomited is attention.. and it could be no behavioural. It could be something upsetting her stomach. Try some Yakult or natural yoghurt in her diet. Also depending on how long it has been going on.. do not feed her for 12 -24 hours just incase it is something that is upsetting her. Food back in will only reinflame the problem. When you start her back on food, keep it plain and dry for a couple of days, then add the rest back in

I didn't think the vomit reflex could be controlled, anyway- but am happy to be proved wrong.. It is still the same time between meals so acid would build up regardless of whether the dog is awake or asleep. Maybe- altho if a pup has 3 or so meals during the day, plus treats... then nothing overnight (which could be up to 10 hours) their tummy could get empty during that long stretch.... She ONLY does it at 6:30am and vomit the same amount. She eats 1 cup of food 3 times a day plus her training treats lke chunkers and chicken liver. Usually i will just put her back into her basket when i hear the gagging sound and she wil vomit and then lick it all back in herself. She would't leave a drop for me to clean up..... She stopped chewig hide anymore, she is not interested in them anymore after she got her pig ear and big bones. I am still trying to find raw meaty bones, do you get them from the butcher???? I have booked her in to see the vet this afternoon, but i am not sure if it is necessary because the first few times, i made it to the vet when they were only small matters. So I try to do abit of research first before taking her to the vet.

I would like a dollar for the amount of times I had to put my hand down my staffords throat to retrieve a half eaten rawhide when he was younger. I was lucky, he did not mind me doing it - my sister was bitten when she tried to retreive one from her staffords throat. Good luck and if it keeps up, I would be making a trip to the vets to rule out any tummy issues
puggy_puggy
Get rid of the pigs ears, raw hides and any other treats like that you give her. They are full of fat and nasty stuff. Alot of dogs can not tollerate this fat so throw up small amounts of bile because of it. What treats are you giving her as reward treats? Read the labels very carefully of these things as they often contain a multitude of preservatives which cause problems. Go to your butcher and get non weigh bearing bones thta your puppy can eat fully. I usually feed lambs ribs (lambs flaps) or lambs back bones. The dogs, even puppys, munch on these till they have eaten them in full. Lastly sometimes puppies do have a bit of reflux just like babies. Could be something she gorws out of. LeeJane
Thanks for all the tips, i will go to the butcher later to see if he has any raw bones for my pup. So do you think I shall cancel teh vet for today and observe her for another 2 days?
puggy_puggy
So do you think I shall cancel teh vet for today and observe her for another 2 days? It's up to you. It seems she is not throwing up all the time and not big amounts. If she was constantly throwing up and all the time then you would have a problem. Personally I don't think that a vet could tell you much more then most of us have already. See how she goes with you getting rid of the rawhide, pigsears and other nasties. And feeding her a little later in the night.
persephone
Try her on some of our ideas, maybe.... as I said.. if she is bouncy and happy, and eating... then maybe she doesn't need the vet's visit just yet  Up to you.
SwaY
My dane did this as a pup, it the vomit was fine bones from the chicken necks, She could not disolve them and would bring them back up. I only gave her 1 a day after that - no problem. As an adults she can eat more.
Rebanne
My nearly 9 yo greyhound still occasionally throws up after a meal of chicken necks. I don't give them to anyone anymore. I use chicken wings instead.
LeeJane
Ok, took my pup to the vet. The vet said she cannot be any healthier, she put on another 3 kgs since her last visit. And vet agreed to avoid any pig ears and hide as they are just dry skin aka fat. We talked about suitable raw bones, he said no backbones, because there are smaller parts in these bones that may choke the dog. He asked me to pig shanks and leg bones, bones that are bigger that the dog's head. So i got some beef neck from the butcher, and there's still lots of meat on the bones. Puppy is enjoying it on the lawn at the moment. In a nutshell, the vet said as long as the dog is not vomitting blood and putting on weight, then there's nothing to worry about. Phew...
