First Time Puppy Owner
I have just started my guys on flaxseed oil about 2 weeks ago, (from the health food store and kept in the fridge) How long did it take for you guys using it to see an improvement in the coat? both of my guys have okay coats, but I am really trying to shine up a red coat on an Amstaff which apparently is impossible to do, but I'm determined to try!! The rest of their diet is Barf based, with greenpet supplements. Overall they are in good health but I want that shiney red coat before the specialty in April LOL if any one else has suggestions for a red staffy type coat I'm all ears LOL Depends on the dosage I think and what condition a dog is in when beginning the usage. Perhaps increase by 10 mls daily and give it another 2 wks.

When you wash her for the speciality, add a squirt of coat oil (or baby oil) to the final rinse (in about a litre of warm water), pour over the coat, smooth through with your hands and don't rinse off. She will gleam.
MellG
Thanks Poodlefan! So what other oils should I feed in conjunction with the Flaxseed oil? At the moment they are getting a desert spoon at night in their barf mince. The greenpet supplement includes kelp in the mix, Sun is a tuff one as they do need to spend time out side when I am at work, but generally from mid afternoon and weekends they are inside with me. I will get stricter with myself and increase to daily grooming. Is it okay for them to get rinsed off in cold water once a day? I run them 5km a day as we are training for our Endurance test in June, at the end of the run, they jump in the shower and get a cooled off in cold water, this shouldn't effect the coat should it? I used to have show horses, and find it frustrating that I can't re produce the same level of shine in my dogs as I did on my show hacks, still learning the tricks of the trade I guess! You could rotate with fish oil (now available in bottles as well as capsules) or evening primrose or even good olive oil! Vets and online stores sell oil blends too. My background is also horses (which is what I based my advice on). You can get some products that provide a sunscreen for coats. Rugging with a light cotton rug might work too if it was likely to stay on. Treat her like a horse in terms of grooming and you should see results. Horses are brushed daily to help shine their coats. They just don't hold an edge well. A tool with a serrated blade or a curry comb works far better for hair removal IMO.

oakway
Oh well here goes. Now you will hate me for what I am about to type. I read this some where, and stopped using Linseed Oil/Flax seed oil and the raw linseed seed's ground or whole. It all started with Missing Link which is a very good product. You may all remember that it suddenly disappeared off the shelf's for a while. The reason was this........some bitches had been having fertility problems and it was traced back to Missing Link, or the content of Linseed. I know it's back on the shelf but with out the Linseed or the Linseed content very much lowered. Now I have never discovered the results of the test so I can not com firm it was definitely the Linseed. So use your linseed sparingly. I am sure Missing link will not say that it was their product that caused it, so it will be difficult to find out. If any of you are out and see the new Missing Link, it may be worth your while to read the ingredients list and see just what is in it. If the Linseed is gone again use it sparingly. poodlefan
Oakway, what you've heard supports my vet's advice that flaxseed oil should not be the sole oil supplement. It should be rotated with others or fed as a blend.

MellG
WOW okay after googeling extensively I can find nothing that supports the idea that Flaxseed can hinder fertility, in fact alot of sites recomend it for improved fertility in humans. Can anyone provide documentation that supports the idea that it can cause issues? I will buy some fish oil and add this in conjunction, I have capsules but find them finicky so straight oil is easier for me to add to their feed, how much would I need to add for it to be considered a blend? should it be equal amounts? Yes, it still has it in it but it does not give the quantities sorry I can't be more specific.
MellG
I spoke to a good friend who aside from being a breeder is also an owner of several health food and organic food stores. She has never, ever heard of Flax seed oils causing fertility issues, and uses it regularly in her own and her dogs diets. So I am not going to panick for now
chepet
The danger of fish oil is that it is rich in vitamin A which can be easily overdosed. Hypervitaminosis A is not so much of a problem with fish oil as cod liver oil, it is the liver with the high vitamin A content. I give my Cairn the contents of 2 fish oil capsules & 1 EPO capsule every night ,== is this too much ?
Rappie
I've only heard of clinical problems from cod liver oil, fish oil has a much greater margin of safety. Generally I use between 1000mg / dog and 1000mg/10kg. The problem is the source of cod liver oil being liver, the same problem can be experienced if liver from other species is fed consistently in larger quantities. OSoSwift
I know Plush puppy make a sunscreen for dogs, I use Reviva Coat Foam and LOVE it, helps to stop the coat from drying out and you can use it on a damp or dry coat. Maybe some leave in sunscreen might help. The reviva coat does not change the texture of the coat either.

Contains 100% cold-pressed oils - safflower, flaxseed, sunflower, cod liver oil, evening primrose oil, wheatgerm oil and pure vitamin E oil. Simply add to your pets food daily.! I have seen great improvements in my two Dobermanns coats since using this product - it beats capsules, although both mine thought the capsules were a treat and munched them down whole LOL Good luck with your speciality show in April
Lemonlime
Wow, so many replies, thanks everyone for your input. I managed to pick up a bottle of fish oil capsules (400 for $13.95) which is great value and the dogs are eating them! I will definately check out the performa 3, thanks for that. Some of the other ones people suggested are fine if you are feeding 1 dog, but it would be very expensive for me.
