kvb
Hi all, I’m new to this forum so excuse me if it has been discussed before…. I have a questions about worming tablets. Since last week I have a new 2 yo lab and according to her medical history she is on monthly interceptor for heartworm and every 3 month she gets a worming tablet (nothing mentioned about the brand). I have been reading about the different brands of tablets and what they do and it seems to me that the interceptor heartworm tablets also protects against intestinal worms (round, hook, whip & tape). So if I only give her interceptor every month will that cover for all? Or do I still need another wormer (ie Drontal) every 3 months? I just don’t want to give her too many tablets.. Any help would be appreciated as she is due on her monthly next week…. Thanks
laffi
If you are on Interceptor (monthly) you don't need to use any other drugs for worms.
ness
I thought there was one worm type that interceptor doesn't cover but I can't for the life of me remember.
puggy_puggy
Inceptor does everything. So no need to give the other tablets every 3 months. I suppose you have to add up the pros and the cons of the situation when you use an all in one product. The so called 'experts' tell us that if you use a spot on or tablet product then heartworm is needed to be done every month with intestinal wormig tablets being given every 3 months. (roundworm, hookworm, whipworm & tapeworm) If you use a product, such as Inceptor, that does everything once every month then are you overdosing with the intestinal wormers because they supposedly only need intestinal worming every 3 months. But then again if you are someone that forgets perhaps it's better that you overdo the intestinal worming then not do it at all.
laffi
I thought there was one worm type that interceptor doesn't cover but I can't for the life of me remember. maybe you are thinking of Advocate, that doesn't cover tape worm?
ness
Nope I am definitely thinking interceptor as its the only product Ness has ever had. It was sometime in her 8 years of life. Maybe they have modified the product since the early days and it now does cover everything.
Erny
Inceptor does everything. So no need to give the other tablets every 3 months. Isn't that 'over kill' (no pun intended) as far as worming is concerned though? Effectively it means the dogs are given 3 times more the dosage of worming drugs than would otherwise be prescribed under the usual worming regime. Well if you have an -mectin sensitive breed you don't have a lot of options.
Quickasyoucan
I have just foregone the proheart injection having educated myself and am now using sentinel every month. I thought it covered all intestinal worms but now a friend has told me there are apparently 2 that are not covered. This worm thing is very confusing
k9katz
Up until a couple of years ago Interceptor did heartworm, and all intestinal worms EXCEPT tapeworm. When they changed it to Interceptor SPECTRUM it then included tapeworm also so all bases are covered. It is possible that the notes you have kvb were written before the product was changed and that is why they were giving a 3 monthly tapeworm tablet I suspect. Sentinel SPECTRUM does the same as interceptor but also includes flea control ( note it will only prevent fleas from breeding, it wont kill adult fleas if they are already present) So to sum up as far as worming control goes, both products cover heartworm, roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and tapeworm Also worth mentioning is that Canimax covers all these worms also but not the flea control and their recommended dosage is every 6 weeks whereas the others are monthly. Hope that helps. Edited February 19, 2009 by k9katz
APBT
has anyone used the supermarket brand exelpet for worms?
Bouledogue Français
I also use Interceptor, and yes it has changed to Interceptor Spectrum and covers all worming. However, I have had 2 different vets tell me that I should add a seperate allwormer tablet 1 - 2 times a year that is different to what is in the Interceptor Spectrum. They say using the same worming treatment all the time can become less effective. Not sure how much truth there is to what they say.
kvb
Thanks all for your help. It has made it clearer to me and also I hope other users of this forum have learned something new. I’m sure this won’t be the last question I have. So till then……

kvb
Went to my local vet and there they said the same as k9katz. They used to give Interceptor and another tablet to cover for tapeworm. Now Interceptor Spectrum covers it all so no need to take others. Just Interceptor once a month. Thanks k9katz for the great info
Zebette
KVB make sure you come and say hi to us all in the Lab thread I have a nearly 9 month old Lab and use the Sentinel Spectrum on him just fine, no worms, no fleas and he takes it soooo easily! witheverythingiam
has anyone used the supermarket brand exelpet for worms? If you want to waste your money, go right ahead & buy it. I call excelpet "The lazy man's expensive wormer" as it's usually only bought by people who are time poor - too lazy to walk into a Vet Surgery to buy their wormers, as although it's cheaper, it's just too inconvenient. -WithEverythingIAm
Adele
I currently use Interceptor which is given every month. I have used Canimax before which is every 6-weeks but was talking to my mum the other day who inisists there is one that they used that protects for a lot longer than those. I think she might have got her facts wrong but any one know of a brand out there that does?

When Jake was having the proheart injection I used drontal with no probs.
