chepet
how can you tell if your dog has a yeast allergy  Ralph ( cairn ) definately has allergies & I've been trialling all sorts of different foods etc but he's has this dreadful doggy smell he never used to have , I've started washing him in vet grade EPO shampoo which was great for the first 3 washes , now that is not helping anymore he has an appoint. at our vet in the morning as his itch has gotten so bad , he has no fleas at all , & currently fed on purina sensitive stomach & skin with an EPO capsule & 2 fish oil capsules per night & 1 1/2 phenergan morn & night I tried the Barf diet for 2 months but it just didn't agree with him & made no difference to his problems , so can you give me any more ideas or any ideas to tell the vet , thanks guys , Cheryl

Jaxx'sBuddy
i had a cairn with severe allergies. after taking her to a naturopath when she was 2 years old, she was put on a diet of chicken frames (raw) and rice with cucumber and carrot. i did also suplement with missing link. she has been on this diet and it really helped and she is now 13 years old. 4 Paws
I'd suggest bathing in Malaseb a couple of times a week, leaving it on for the recommended 10 mins before rinsing
persephone
chepet... What some of mentioned in the other thread.. was that your dog may have a yeast problem.. not an allergy TO yeast Yeasts are associated with a particular fungal infection. yeasts feed on sugary things... so avoiding sugar, grain and over processed foods can help. Washes can help ,as well, by controlling what lives on the dog's skin. Ask the vet, do some 'googling' on yeast, malasezzia(spelling) ?... and best of luck. It may NOT be a yeast problem.. but may indeed be an allergy... a dermatologist is the best person to ask, if you are unhappy with what the vet says

chepet
Hi ,we're back from the vet , Ralph had a thorough going over , he now has some prednisone tabs - the daily eating grass & vomiting frothy stuff he thinks is " fur balls " from swallowing fur from all the biting himself as he is very hairy , he said to give the pills a few days to settle him down & if he is still eating grass & vomiting he will do some blood tests he also cleaned his anal glands -- whew -- that was a new experience - both for me & Ralph ! if things don't settle he will send him to an allergy specialist in Sydney he's only been on this new food about 2 weeks & he said to give it at least 6 weeks - so between everything I'm trying fingers crossed
persephone
the daily eating grass & vomiting frothy stuff he thinks is " fur balls " from swallowing fur from all the biting himself Oh- ok.. haven't heard of this before . So- the prednisone tablets will stop his itches... temporarily.. what did he say about the one bare spot, and the smell you were worried about? Was it perhaps from his Anal Glands? While prednisone will help with the symptoms.. they also make it harder to work out what triggers the allergy Hopefully he will be more comfortable now tho.
