That Doggy Smell On Coat - Yeast Infection?

 Share

Recommended Posts

My 2yr old GSD always has that doggy smell and the longer she goes without a bath the worse its gets. It seems to be on her coat - or skin, because i can smell it on my hands afterwards.

She gets bathed about every three weeks with avoleen or fidos every day dog shampoo, washed out properly. She eats one cup of royal canin and the rest raw each day. What is it?

ETA after possible ideas that it may be yeast infection. If so, what do other ppl recommend? Feed?

Megaderm

Healthy paws skin

Omega 3.6.9 oil

Goochy natural canine

etc

she straches a bit but i'm having trouble ridding the fleas. I have just moved out of the rental property where the fleas were bad to our new acerage (flealess) yay!!. I'm just waiting for the capstar to arrive today to knock them out.

If it is a yeast infection, how do they get that, what are the symptoms and how treated? thanks 4paws

I agree- it could be a yeast infection...

How often do you comb her coat out? The double coat will hold heat/dirt....

What sort of bedding does she have?

Does she chew her feet?

has she any anal gland problems?

If anal glands are over full, and seep... this smell travels all over in no time flat ...Yuk!

edit to add- yeast/bacteria can be quickly transferred from the anal region or feet .. to the rest of the dog by licking.. and sleeping curled up ...

She gets brushed couple times a week with a slicker. Just did her over two weeks ago with a rake and furminator.

Her bedding is one of those frames with the hession stuff changed when really dirty.

She's not chewing her feet.

And it doesn't smell like anal glands (had the pleasure of getting squirted once when i was helping to restrain a GR in a vets that got very scared!) And she doesnt have any problems with anal glands that i know of.....

i will try the maleseb thanks

One of my gsd's used to be the same, always smelly and itchy.I had her to the vets and they just said it was probably an airborne allergy and out her on tablets, can't remember the name

When I run out and had to go back to get more another vet was on and when speaking to her she mentioned it may be a yeast infection as gsd's are prone to them and sold me the malaseb. This did clear her up after a few hydrobaths

I feed Artemis and Healthy Paws Skin supplement plus flaxseed oil when I have it on hand

Do you have a hydrobath Wildatheart? If not it may pay to get someone in at least once as the hydrobath gets right into the skin and get them to use the malaseb.Make sure it is left on for the suggested time(10 mins I think)

Just make sure they disinfect the bath/pump between clients or you may end up with more problems

Not sure of ingredients in Royal Canin but check if it contains grains as this may be contributing

My 3 y.o was the same when she was young - bad enough that you always felt like washing your hands after you patted her, no matter how many times I bathed her or what I bathed her with.

It wasn't until I was talking about bathing dogs with a friend that I twigged that she didn't stink anymore and hadn't had a bath for ages... in that time I'd changed her from a 1/2 raw 1/2 super premium food over to full raw.

She's also a lot less itchy, and her coat is now a beautiful shiny black (I get heaps of comments on her coat now) as opposed to an awful brown. I've put it down to her not tolerating grain or preservatives, most likely grain.

She gets a good tablespoon of human grade Linseed oil and another one of ACV in her dinner every night to help with coat condition and her itchies.
