Thanks guys, There is someone in mind for the job but just putting it out there, also a new lot of Puppies due soon, so if anyone knows anybody keen to be a puppy carer, flick me a PM and Ill pass it on. The puppies really are amazing, the lttle fella we looked after was so good, he just fitted in and went with the flow. We have seen some really hyper labs come through our obedience school and these guys are completely the opposite!! SEDA, is definatley breeding quality pups!!

My jane is as naughty (if not more so) than ever!!! Hello teenager!!!!

Yes we will be back for training (god knows we can at least TRY!!!) and I have been putting some real effort into her recall in particular but with no real improvement! Is it wrong to wish that she had just a teeny tiny bit of 'fear' lurking in that big personality of hers cos I really think just a micro-gram of caution would help curb her enthusasiam and make training soooo much easier! I'm still waiting :curtsey: for her to go through that 'Fear' phase of development....or have we missed it???

Tez, diffent breeds go through fear stages at different times, some breed fear periods overlap but with jane been a X breed you will probably never know, i am sure with some training you will get a great recall, there are some fantastic threads in teh training section about recall and how to get a 100% call.

An outgoing dog is better to train, you just need to use her enthusiam to your advantage.

Good Luck

Darcy never went through an obvious fear period, she was wary of trucks at about 5 months old but I can remember one walk down the street and one trip through the city where they seemed to bother her. Never seen hide nor hair of it again.

Tez have you done any clicker work with Jane's recall issues? I'm working on Zee's recall with the clicker and am rapt with how well she's doing with it.

Thanks for the advice Pandii and Jess. I'm abit stumped about how to train this very confident girl as she trains so very well when there are no distractions and that includes recall but it all goes out the window when anything catches her eye! And I mean anything...even movement 300 metres away!!!! I was doing recall in the showgrounds oval and she was excellent until she sighted a cow moving in the paddock next to the grounds. Now this cow was at least 300 metres away and it was only grazing but she really fixated on it. I am sure that if the oval wasn't fenced then she would have been over to investigate in a heartbeat.

I am going to look into getting the 'Really Reliable Recall' book and D.V.D that was discussed on another thread to see if it can work with Jane as well as persist, persist, persist!

Tez, you are doing everything right and I mean everything, I have seen the way you are with Jane and you are faultless with your training techniques, I know I have said this to you before but Cooper was exactly the same, he was great with no distractions but as soon as there was another dog, or a person or a horse or anything really away he would go and no amount of calling or screaming or yelling or me running in another direction was going to bring him back to me!!

After about 2 years it started to change and I was always consistant in my rewards and everything I did, even now occasionally he bucks the system and decides there is something he would rather go and see than listen to me but those times are few and far between. The other day we were at the park and a horse came over the hill very close to us, we were sitting I was taking photos under a shady tree and his focus turned to what I thought would just be another dog and I turned around and it was a horse :) only about a stones throw away, boy did I move, I know the younger ones wouldn't chase, Tully will bark, but Cooper well off he went I jumped up had the whistle in my mouth quick as and ran in the opposite direction so bloody quick, he only went a little way then turned around and came to me I was so stoked he got the biggest treat and huge pats, I thought for sure he would have kept going but he seems to be sticking more closely which is fantastic.

I always say he has a threshold of distance if the horse is in the distance he is fine although if I seen it getting close I would pop the lead on. I think with Jane you have to do what I did with CJ always be on the look out for situations that arise that you know she is going to react to and pop the lead on when you know she is going to go, I know this is hard very hard as I have been doing it for nearly 4 years now and even though CJ is getting better and better all the time there are still times like horses etc that I wouldn't trust him to do the right thing and stick close.

I always maintain some dogs are just like this it is in thier nature, no fear and very sociable. I was lucky that my other 3 aren't so adventurous, they never really went through a fear stage but they are just different, dont know how Id cope with 4!! My friend and I were also talking about recall today (you know Deb) Miss Ella has come ahead in leaps and bounds with her recall and Deb is treating her every time she calls her back, her OH told her to stop treating her every time, I said she should because if the treats for her needing her to come back are intermitant then she will get clued on to this and if she has something better afoot she might decide not to come back becasue there is always the chance she wont get the reward so she takes the chance and doesn't come back. It isn't like she is calling her back every five minutes, it might only be two recalls on a 2 hour walk like today. I hope you know what I mean, not sure if I have explained that last bit to well. Another thing is at training, the dogs seem to know exaclty what you want them to do so they will just comply but out and about is a completely different story.

Anyway like I said you are doing everything right don't get disheartened!!

On another note, I have been talking to Maws today, she is having a fabulous time, hopefully she will get a change to pop in and say hi. she doesnt get back till Feb, she is missing her doggies like crazy!!

Also Tez, remember Benny, well he got rehomed and he went to a family with a 7 year old beagle, two kids 12 & 14 and he is in his element, he loves it and his old owner has been to visit and she said he was in 7th heaven, so that was a very happy ending to what I thought was going to end in heartache for poor Benny, I was so pleased!! She did try but I think in the end she did the right thing by him!!

TLC...Thank you soo much for your kind words and morale booster. It has really helped as I was feeling abit disheartened! I think that part of it is that I know if Jane had better recall then I would be able to do so much more enjoyable stuff with her and I am so frustrated that I can't let her free run more at the moment. You know I love her to bits but she is a tough one for me training-wise. I see so many dogs progress at training and with us, its like we are going backwards! But I will persist and I know that we will get better! I do think it will take a while as I think she will be a big loopy pup for some time yet!

I look at your dogs and think they must have always been as good as I see them now but of course I realise the time and effort you have put in is something I haven't been around to see...so thanks so much for your support!

Love the photos...especially of the five doggies all smiling with their tongues hanging out! :)

Its very good news about Benny and I'm glad his old owner got to see him happy in his new home. It must make her feel so much better about the whole situation!

Hey Tez, its funny cause I know exactly how you feel, and even now have to be on the look out for things that trigger Cooper and his highly sociable little brain :) I try not to get complacent, cause if I do you can be sure around the next corner will be the next thing to test my patience with him, but like I said I can finally see light at the end of the tunnel and think it is time and patience and lots of training that has finally paid off. I used to get so annoyed that I had to be so cautious and always have the lead ready and always be on the look out for triggers but I came to the realization that that is just how it had to be and I think the more I relaxed the better he became! Funny that the other 3 are totally different and I have done nothing different with them at all.

Yes and how cute is Pickles, they were funny all getting lined up for a photo, and when pickles first got out of the car Lacy went running up to him to play then she kind of stood back as if to say whoooo your big now :( he has gotten a lot bigger since thier last play date!!

Well the penny's dropped as to why you were so hyper aware of horses when we were down at Killarney that day (remember?)! I didn't realise it was a specific trigger of Coopers!

How old is Pickles now??? It must be so hard to give em back when the time comes!

ah you see, horses arghhhh. Funny the other day I was out there with Deb and we always keep our eyes peeled and we spotted some coming up fast behind us, so we called the dogs in all 6 of them :) clipped them on lead and the horses galloped past us 2 or 3 times and Coop is totally unreactive on the lead, he couldnt care less that the horses were like a 2 meters away and racing past us. :(

Pickles is 8 months old now, I couldnt be a carer Id get too attached, Laura had done it a couple of times now as she has worked with SEDA for a few years. She said you get it in your head at the start that the pup has to go at the end of 12 months.

No worries - good on you for persisting and continuing to look for ideas to help you out with it. The RRR info seems to be very highly recommended, I have her Control Unleashed book and found it that good that I started rereading it the moment I finished it.

Yep. I'm kicking off at 7pm.

First night I will mainly want to hear from people as to what areas they want to focus on.

Might end up more of a Q & A the first night I think.
