Well I guess I shouldn't comment on the pink pom-poms until I know you better jerojath. Will be sure to post times when I have them.

tlc, that's a great acheivement! Congratulations! :)

I used to visit our local old folks home and hospital at the invitation of their co-ordinator before she retired. The dogs were great although some of the residents weren't partial to GSDs. One lady became a bit hysterical when Peppi and 2 of his puppies ('Red' who we just lost and his brother 'Mac') visited. She demanded that I take the ALSATIANS away!! When Lisa (coordinator) asked her why, she said 'because they're savage - they'll eat you! :D Of course, they weren't 'official' VISPAT' dogs (is that what they are called?),but one of Peppi's kids was certified and I am very proud of him. Can I ask what the difference is between Delta and Vispat?

I've never heard of vispat so can't be any help there it is funny the perception of people with bigger dogs gsds and rotti is particular, Shan was saying today she has been going to visit with Maws and the same thing has happened.

Just a question for a gsd lady like yourself, there is an old guy at the park who we see a bit and he always talks about his alsations, apparently he had them for years, I would have thought anyone who owned a gsd would call it by it's proper name and there is something about calling them alsations that is just not right. One of my past obedience instructors, you might know her Faye bolden, explained it to me one day but I have forgotten what the reason was? I found this thread

But talk about mixed ideas on the right and wrong.

It really is an achievement, isn't it. She would hate me bragging for her, but it really is something to be proud of!

I can ask her what time it starts and finishes each day if you like. I plan on going down on the week-end if she gets through the week O.K. I'd love to be there if she makes it through all the tests... although I'm not sure I can pluck up the courage to fly to NZ (I'm not good on domestic flights let alone NZ or beyond) if she wins a place in the Trans Tasman challenge!

Theresa

It is a wonderful achievement! Especially only being in it for such a short amount of time in comparison to some of the "lifers". :cheer:

Yes please let me know - especially if it goes a bit later each afternoon maybe I can duck off early from work and head over to have a look for a few hours.

Re: flying - hey if I can go to NZ twice by plane then you can too. I hate flying, I get travel sickness and I hate the confinement and the fact that I'm not in control (I'm a bad passenger!!). Beautiful place though - it's worth it. :cheer:

A big congrats on the Delta assessment tlc :D

We're trialling tomorrow in Ballarat so no walks here. Brrrrrr!!!! :)

From memory, VISPAT stands for Visiting Pets as therapy or somesuch. It would be interesting to know the difference (if any) between the two:confused:

As for the difference between GSD and Alsatian? Funny you should ask!! I'm a bit of a breed historian and that's one of the articles I'm just finishing off (a coupe of things to confirm through a friend overseas). There is so much misinformation surrounding the name change in Britain (Yes, it was changed several times) that some of the stories make my mind boggle. It was first changed in France around 1915, and early English imports became known as Alsatian wolf dogs.

Here are some snippets ...

The name misnomer in England can be accredited to Lord Brabazon of Tara. The first imports were known as ‘French Police Dogs’ and then 'foreign sheep dogs', but to cut a long story short, Lord Brabazon came up with the name ‘Alsatian wolf dog’ and the first club devoted to the breed was 'The Alsatian wolf dog club' - established in 1919.

Prior to the First World War, the French had correctly translated the breeds name ‘Deutscher Schaeferhund’ to ‘Chien de Berger Allemand’, and breeders there registered their kennel names and their dogs in the German Stud book (Zuchtbuch). The French strongly contended that the breed originated in Alsace-Lorraine, a province belonging to France before the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-7, and which belonged to it once again after the war, and so the name was changed to ‘Berger d’alsace’ which also helped dog dealers with their sales as the word 'German' was not in favour at the time. Many servicemen first saw Alsatians during the war under the belief they were French.

Of course there's a great deal more to the story, but its too long to print here. Its a subject I've really enjoyed researching though.

Considering they laughed at her when she first started they might have changed their minds by now! :D

I'll be sure to let you know times as soon as I have them. Maybe they're on the web site? http://www.vwsda.org

I'm a terrible flyer too, but if I could, I would fly to Germany for the Sieger show. Valium might help

Good luck at Ballarat...hoping to hear good things next time you post

What's that saying, success is the best form of revenge? Good on her :)

I reckon there should be a knock out service for flying people like us - I'd pay extra. Knock me out, drag me onto the plane and wake me up when we're in the airport at the other end. Solves both the nervous flying and the travel sickness issue in one hit.

Bugger about your friends car Pandii :)

No passes here unfortunately - so much that can go wrong in Open :) Darcy's getting better every trial she does and I had some lovely comments about her work today. Unfortunately she anticipated the finish on both the flat retrieve and the change of positions which bombed us this morning, never seen her do that before. This arvo she didn't sit in the change of positions.

Looks like we have some work to do before Melton next Sunday. :)

Well good luck for next week Jess.

Just wondering has anyone ever done any rally o stuff? We have just started to do some basic rally o at obedience it is great fun and something different to get the dogs thinking a bit more. We were trying to find different ways to keep the dogs and our interest so we thought we would give it a go.

Hey JJ, do you get your eukanuba at petstock? Have you had trouble getting it and have you heard about the shortage and the probs they are having with it. I had an interesting talk with one of our local food suppliers today about dog dry food. Eagle pack is next to impossible to get and there was a problem with Euk.

tlc I've not heard of the rally-o before, but I have seen canine displays/exhibitions where teams of dogs competed in a relay-type scenario...

it was sure fun to watch so I reckon it would be great fun to compete in something like that!

I am a member of the Eukanuba 'Platinum Breeder' Club so buy through them.

I did notice Fairy St had no Euk recently and was unsure why.... just thought maybe they weren't stocking it anymore?

Been in Melbourne today (again  ) on 'business' and brought home a whole lot more critters

I really should leave my wildlife license at home when I go down there.......

Oh can we have some pictures can we can we please, ust so I can go ewwww gross

We as far as the Euk goes I was told today that there was some kind of contamination at some point and there was no stock available as they were having trouble getting the contamination (what ever it was) under control. Not sure how true it is, the prop of the shop told me that. You might want to look into it further just thought I'd let you know.

Rally o sounds like exactly what you seen it is really fun and you do do it with a group, it will be interesting to see how we go with it. At the moment it is just fun and good for the dogs to be learning some different stuff instead of the basic mundane boring obedience stuff. A few that go to obedience rain hail or shine are getting a little fed up with the same old thing. When we have a crack at some evening get togethers Shan, Terri and I might be able to give you a demo if we get good enough. might be good for a laugh!!
