I just cant understand how a powerful dog like dante with a high drive will go on a flat collar and only pats for rewards

JJ, if you came to Harris street I could convince OH to go too.

I reallly want him to do some work with Dante, if we are going to start taking her on road trips she needs to improve, still trying to convince him

At least you was a good husband and took her hot chips, not your fault they never stayed down

Tell her I need to catch up and say Hi

Hey TLC, so if you have a dolg pulling like a steam train in a high prey mode, how do you get the dogs attention at brieley?? Waving a bit of food in its face isnt going to work.

Intrested in show training too

I have only come across this a few times in the time I have been at Brierly (3 years) one example is Miggy, as you have seen she has very high prey drive and Shannon does a fantastic job with training her. They do allow Halti's and Gentle leaders which would allow a bit more control over high prey drive. Dogs that get a bit geared up, just get thier attention diverted to something else. and you would be suprised food does work with some but not all. I guess it depends what your dog is used to. All the large breeds we have had train since they were puppys have done great with only positive methods. But like I have said before it is not for all dogs. You have to find what works for the individual.

Glad you are enjoying it Tanya, it is amazing to see how much Bruno has come out of his shell just after a couple of weeks, Well done!!

Might give Patricai a call and have a chat, a halti or such, puts Dantes neck out and I get sick of seeing the chiro

She ignors food once she is in that drive only a correction has ever worked to get her attention back or ceasers nudge/kick he does works well too.

Its a shame really, I want OH to take Dante to training but cant see Dante working on a flat collar.

Thank Tlc for you help

I think Brierley is great...even though Jane totally flunked her puppy test on Sunday...So very very distracted by everything but it was more about me than her. I figure I still have lots to learn about getting her focused and motivated and hopefully that will develop as I get to know her triggers better! She is a strong willed ratbag who really just wants to play and play with all the other pups and dogs...even the dogs who don't want to have anything to do with her...poor love! Sooo...We'll try again next week. I really like the way Patricia explains the way a dog thinks and her love of her charges is lovely to see!!!

Hi guys, long time no write I know, sorry about that... life has been absolutely chaotic lately and I haven't had any chance to get online at all.

First of all, happy birthday Pandii for a week or so ago. I hope you had a great day.

Secondly, I hope the rest of you have been well and tlc as you know I am sorry about your nan but I am glad you have some closure about it now.

Tlc and RJ it was great to see you both today, Maws hasn't moved all night!!! Hope to see Tez, Munchin, JJ, Tenties and T&T soon.

T&T I'm so glad to hear that Brierly is working well for you, I will get there someday soon when I am not working and see you and Bruno!!

My opinion on Harris St and Brierly after attending both during the past 5 years (Harris St for 3.5 years and Brierly for 3.5 years, yes I can count, there was overlap!!) is that Harris St is good if you want to compete in obedience trials or agility trials and Brierly is good for your every day training and socialisation.

I started Maws at Harris St puppy class and we loved it, so did it again (he wasn't old enough to move to class one) and then when he moved into class one, it tied in with the end of the year so we moved to Brierly as they went later in the year. I enjoyed it but found the off-lead socialisation a bit full on for Maws at that age. I just kept Maws on lead during class and it was fine. I loved the well behaved program at Brierly cause it offers everything in day to day life that you want your dog to learn, not just heeling all day.

We went back to Harris St when I started doing agility with Maws and we became members so of course we did obedience there. By that stage Maws was in class 3 and incredibly bored heeling all day, he would not switch on at all in class and we both started to find it incredibly boring so we started trying to get from agility to Brierly but the timing was wrong and I was always late (agility 9-10, training 10-11). WE stil prefered to do this as Harris St was so boring, but the timing was juts wrong cause they would always want us to pack up after agility and the I would be really late to Brierly, so when we got Migs we started doing class 1 at Harris St and I didn't enjoy it at all.

After I started having probs with the trainers doing agility I decided to cut ties with Harris St and take both mine to Brierly as I really enjoyed the program and off-lead socialisation there (Maws was fine with it by this stage, in fact he LOVES it!!). Brierly has been wonderful for Migs as Harris St just wanted me to correct her all the time and she had just come from a very unstable background and was becoming aggresive and unpredictable and having all the dogs on lead all the time did not help her as she never got to get close enough to try and teach her right from wrong. I have to manage her closely at Brierly if the other dogs are off lead but I keep her under control with a gentle leader and by using various techniques to change her focus if she is fixed on something, harsh corrections do not help her when she is in high drive anyway. A piece of food in front of her face does not fix the problem but there are heaps of other techniques that can be used. Brierly has been the best thing ever for Migs and she has never needed a check chain no matter how full on she gets.

Maws is now in class 4 at Brierly and although I don't do much training with him now (he just loves the off lead running!) when we do class there are a bunch of other advanced dogs there that we do training withand it's good fun. I hope this helps a little with the questions people are asking, I am not advocating one or the other but I don't think that check chains should be the decider cause there are heaps of other ways to "correct" your dog without the use of a chain. Migs cannot wear a chain cause her skin is so sensitive it rubs her neck raw and so I use a flat collar during class, cause when she is working she is fine. I could never walk her with a flat collar outiside but when she is in work mode, no probs.

Hope to see you all soon and have fun with your puppies!!

Hi all,

Last I spoke to Linda aka Tenties the only prob we came up with, was a venue to do some training at!!!!!!

Not too sure if they would be happy for us to use the enclosure @ Harris street. But could always just use the oval.

Wouldnt be able to do it at Brieley on the oval as only Patricia has special permit to use that and all other dogs are not allowed on it.

So if any one can come up with a better venue, would be great :)

Linda also said that she has a table that would be suitable for tableing if any one with a small breed is interested and some rope to make a ring.

Count me in, if we can get it up and running. I prob cant be much help, but would love to have others handle Boofster as he needs others to handle him to get his confidence up around strangers (especially leaning over him and gaiting him out)

Linda Linda Linda, where are you ????????????????

JJ you have showed before ( and have lots of experience) and Linda has lots of experience I have an incy bit so there is no reason we cant make it happen between us, if you are all still interested.

Let me know what you think and we can ge it started :)

Cheers Janet

RJ - I think it was just you, me & tenties who wanted to do show training - hopefully there are others.

I think Harris St would suit, on the oval. I'd be happy there.

Yeah lets get started - I have a 2.5 year old BITCH who has her first shows in August and I've done nothing with her!

All you have to do is put the camera on continuous, and you should have the option of slow med or fast, try each setting see how you go. It was amazing to see that most of the action ones you shot off that day were in focus, and I dont mean that in a bad way about you taking the pics I just mean you would think out of all the continuous shooting that a few would be blurry but they were all great!!

Oh Poor Puppy, hope she settles in soon without her siblings, what you call her??

At least your poop levels are less now JJ

Very rarely the camera takes a shot out of focus TLC, I was doing something wrong hte other day though as it would only take about 4 shots then stop, but I had it working today, got great shots down along hte great ocean road

TLC - She'll settle down. Taken her out of the puppy kennels and moved her in with the 'big' dogs so she's got some company...

We call her 'Tarni' - As her name is "Jerojath Tarnagulla". Don't really like the name Tarni but it sought of just stuck!
