We have used cabanossi and cheese which gets quite disgusting on the hot nights. We have also used beef liver treats which are quite good but the little guy seems to be getting bored with these, so I'm looking for something that's really, really yummy. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Something small, reasonably healthy, not fatty, etc...I'm sure you understand what I mean Thanks. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I sometimes use cabanossi but I don't like the smell on my hands after a while, find the smell more disgusting than the cheese so that's why I mainly use cheese. SkySoaringMagpie Posted February 2, 2009 Share Posted February 2, 2009 I've been a bit wary of cabanosi since those studies came out linking processed meat to increased cancer rates in humans. Given that we are much bigger and uglier than our dogs, and cabanosi is awfully fatty, I've tried to steer clear. My dogs are much bigger than yours too. That said, if I'm at the supermarket and need something fast I'll grab a stick. The other thing we use a lot is cooked chicken breast or cheap steak chopped into tiny chunks. Low fat, additive free, easy to cook - we just chuck it on the George Forman grill or pick apart a BBQ chook when we've finished with it. People often react a bit in class to the idea of giving chicken and steak but it's no more expensive than most crappy bagged dog treats and a lot healthier. I like dried liver as a medium value reward. I usually have a bit of kibble as well. I also pick over our human leftovers - if we have some bbq'd sausages, grilled chops etc (also not screamingly healthy) I chop them up and use that. You can dry bake cabanossi, devon etc so it's not slimy. Chop it up, place it on baking paper and give it 20-25 mins at 180 degrees. Hey presto, dry easy to handle tasty treats. So every day, I cook up a sausage (or rather, cook a few on one day and they last a day or two) and I'm getting used to carrying sausage around I only use the sausage as my 'big' reward though so it doesn't lose it's value for him. Once he's got something a few times, we switch to cheese or a kibble he really likes (natures gift semi-moist) once I know he's got it and we're just reinforcing. Except that the dog that came first was our old Afghan who promptly dragged his ears in the eggy mess - much to OH's disgust *slaps self* Edited because I can't do verbs today either... Happy Paws treats - as a special bonus when learning something new and important (eg recall, letting me out the door). They are made by a doler and don't melt (all natural etc). 4 Paws Posted February 2, 2009 Share Posted February 2, 2009 (edited) I have a large snap lock bag in the freezer that I throw anything I come up with so there's always variety.Usually buy things when I see them on special or reduced to clear Can include any of the following cut into small pieces- Kangaroo sausages Kangaroo Steak Beef/Chicken sausages Cheese cabanossi franfurts chicken left over chops/steak If I am going to be out a fair while and wanting to use dry treats I use lamb puffs and dried tuna On a training dvd I have they even suggest using jars of baby food,a few licks equals one treat,would be particuarly good using it for a recall I guess Edited February 2, 2009 by 4 Paws Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
