I just caught our 13 week old puppy with one of those little packets that come from new bags and shoes, the ones with the little salt type stuff. There was still some in the packet and abit on the floor and I washed her mouth so hopeing she didnt swallow any. Should I be worried? Is this stuff toxic?

I've been talked out of ringing the vet but instead to just watch her. It's been a over an hour and there have been no signs thats something's wrong, she's still crazy, but im still watching her like a hawk.

Just did a quick google, and if its silica gel (thats what most of those little packets are), it should be fine. There are often warnings on the packs to keep away from children and pets, but apparantly thats in case of choking on the pack itself.

This is from a vet site:

While it is indeed true that it is not meant for consumption, with most ingestions silica gel produces only mild stomach upset which typically resolves with minimal to no treatment. If very large quantities are eaten, however, such as with ingestions of multiple packets or mouthfuls of kitty litter, intestinal obstruction is a possibility- especially in very small animals. Do watch the pup and make sure he can't get to the garbage. Silica gel won't kill her, but some things can do damage. One to watch out for is those thin spongy absorbant sheets that they often put into wrapped meat packs in the supermarket. Another (yuuukkkk, gross!) is tampax.

Hi Whitka, this is not to advise you re the silica but to empathise......we have had many watchful days and nites. My 2 pups are so into eating and swallowing everything at the moment in spite of us all trying so hard to 'put everything out of reach'. We are well over the thousand dollar mark in shoes, thongs, glasses, furniture etc. Sometimes I eventually discover who the culprit was from their poos! There are so many people living in and coming and going in this house its impossible to chew proof it. Just cannot wait till they are grown out of it. Good luck with your chewy pup! :mad

Thought I would update, CJ is fine still, running around like a loony is eating and drinking fine and poos look good. Will keep a closer eye on what she chews or gets into.

Why is it pups know how to give you a hart attack!
