Chicken And Rice As Main Diet

Chicken & rice as a normal diet is a terrible diet. Why oh why do vets keep telling people to feed rice? I suppose the same reason why they promote their dry food as the only way.

Dogs need bone as well as meat.

Rice as well as many other grains can cause skin poblems and is of no nutritional use to a dog.

Have you looked into feeding a BARF or RAW diet?

Chicken necks, sardines, kangaroo, meaty bones, pulped veggies & fruit etc

Chicken and rice is bland and easy on unsettled tummies.

Would you rather they advise clients with dogs that need a bland diet till they recover that they feed them PAL.

I do not have to research anything , I am trying to explain that SICK dogs need a very bland diet and Chicken and rice is bland and proven to be easy on a SICK dogs stomach. There is time to push the barf, prey model whatever diet onto people and isn't when they have a dog shitting through the eye of an needle with gastro.

That's right, and you took a swipe at vet's who recommend a bland diet even though it is for a good reason, then you took another swipe at vets by saying they promote dry food. Not necessary and not relevant.

Judge me if you wish but this is personal experience not advice!!!!

Personally when a dog is sick has the runs/vomitting for whatever reason, I ALWAYS give boiled Chicken and Rice. This is what helps my dogs. It is bland and the only thing that helps them get better.

I wouldnt give it as "part" of a regular diet, but I have absolutely no hesitation in giving it to a dog who has gastro or whatever the problem is which will get them back to normal.

One of my dogs has a extremely highly sensitive stomach. I very slowly introduced the raw diet to her, and was going fine for a while, then all the sudden had the runs severely. I tried different things but everything reacted the same way. It didnt matter if it was fresh meat or bones it had the same affect.

I had to make the decision to go back to dry. Not a decision that i took lightly. I didnt want my dog to be having the runs severely everyday which made her very different. Wasn't her happy cheery self. Her runs have stopped since putting her back on dry.

Raw isn't always suitable for every dog. I think some dogs just arent suitable on the raw diet, like in Charlotte's case. I still do it for my other dog as she has the best stomach i've seen!

EVERYONE recommends something bland for unsettled stomachs, including vets - and chicken and rice is as good as anything, and better than most. And the rice certainly wont do any harm - and will settle the stomach.

Maybe you should do some research of your own before you begin beating people up for agreeing with an universally accepted diet for SICK dogs. All grains are different, and rice is very different.

Leadandfeather, if the dog is a very picky eater, and you feel she is putting on weight on chicken and rice, and is keen to eat it, you could make it one daily meal, and make the second more balanced. Raw chicken is better, dogs have more trouble digesting cooked meat. However, if she will readily eat cooked chicken and rice, if she was my fussy eater, I'd let her have it. She may also be putting on weight because rice is a carb.

Of course, she may be eating the c&r because it is not upsetting her stomach, and she feels better and therefore eats better. Once she has recovered, she may be easier to feed. Sometimes stomach problems persist in a minor form for a long time, and once they are cured, the dog eats better.

There may have been soy or corn in the dry food (I don't know what she was eating). Soy is not well digested by dogs, and although corn is a little better, it, with soy, can cause stomach upsets.

Once she is recovered, if she is still picky, change the white rice to whole grain brown rice which is an excellent source of energy, minerals and vitamins - particularly B vitamins. You could maybe feed quality kibble for the second meal, or bones, or BARF, or you could add a full vitamin/mineral supplement.

Or, you could begin with cooked chicken and rice as a base - and add small amounts of things to balance the diet - meat, potatoes (Vit C), fruit and veges, cottage cheese etc. That wont be 100% balanced, but it will be more balanced, and if she will eat bones too, you're nearly there!!

The main thing is to keep her on what the vet suggested until the problem abates.

On other dog forums with a large American membership, they advise ppl to give their dogs plain, tinned pumpkin for gastro, something I have never seen in Aust. Seems to do wonders for dogs with gastro & constipation. As everyone has said cooked chicken & rice isn't a good long term diet. Rmb have all the enzymes a dog needs which are distroyed through cooking.

We have always used sweet potato with chicken and chicken broth when Ollie has been ill (and that has been lots in the past). Mashed pumpkin was what our vet suggested as well as the sweet potato (he thought it was better than rice or pasta) when dogs needed a bland diet.
