Puppy Bathing Questions...

post-25959-1233207569_thumb.jpgHi everyone

Hope my fellow Melbournians (humans and dogs) are surviving the heat.

My girl (12 weeks, pic attached) is well and truly ready for her first bath after a month of getting up to all sorts of mischief in the back yard!

I have 2 queries:

1) The breeder advised to wash her in Eucalyptus wool wash? Is this common practice for Goldens/ long haired breeds? Is this the best thing for her?

2) She has had 2 out of 3 of her needles - if I were to take her to a dog groomers/ get a mobile groomer would I be putting her at risk?

Thanks as always DOLers!

Hi There

Come visit us in the Retriever Thread in the breed sub forum, within general discussion!

All the Goldie people I think use Aloveen Shampoo! Personally this is what I have done - I bought from the pet section in BigW a dog washing hose that fits onto the bath nozzle in your bath tub and put down a rubber mat so he is not slipping all over the place - lot cheaper in the long run to do it yourself, but other times I am too lazy and Benson gets a hydrobath!

Perhaps if you don't want to bath her then get out a Mobile Groomer - less risk re illnesses as you don't leave the yard! :)

By the way what is the beautiful girl's name???

FTPO, settrlvr and ArtyFarty - thanks, I will go on he hunt for some Aloveen and give the wool wash a miss. I'll see how I go the first time on my own - little Miss is very willful and tries to get her own way a lot ;-) At the moment she is tearing apart one of my thongs

Her name is Cherry Pie but she is known as just Cherry. And Ive tried to join the retriever thread butI couldnt post there - I thought maybe you had to be a long time contributor to DOL or something? I'll try again.

Thx again all!

You should be able to post in the Retriever thread the same as any other thread here

Congratulations on your beautiful puppy.

Personally I use Aloveen Shampoo on my goldens. I use a hyrdrobath (i bought one) but times where my back is too sore, or i just am lazy they go to a groomer as i am too chicken to do their nails myself

My first Golden i got at 16 weeks and i gave her a bath at home as she was a nervous wreck so didnt like the idea of stressing her by getting a mobile or sending her to a groomer. We always did her from home before i became a groomer myself and she came into work with me and always got done every 4-6 weeks even after i quit dog grooming for good. I bought a hydrobath last year so that even when she wasnt well i could still wash her from home.

I wash my girls between grooms as they wrestle everyday and by about 2 weeks they absolutely stink so it's good to be able to give them a wash in between.

I think the only section you need 150 posts for is the off topic section.

People used to wash the dogs with wool wash, because the eucalyptus oil was supposed to disccourage fleas (At least that was what I was told) personally I use a flea treatment (Advantix? or somthing like that) I take my dogs down to the local petstock, which has one of those coin operated hydrobaths, costs me $5- to wash my dog, no mess etc. (Just remember to take plenty of towels) I don't use the blow dry thing (The one here used cold air) I use any cheep shampoo, or the one in the wash thingy (I know he fills it with a good quality horse shampoo) My dogs come up fine, Maybe not show dog quality, but then they are just pets.

What's the difference? The mobile groomer coming to you or you going to a groomer? I don't see any.

She would still fit in the laundry tub wouldn't she? If so it's very easy to bath dogs in there.

I probably would be using something other then wool wash.

That's what I'd do to. Both from a practicality point of view and a socialisation point of view. Ease her into the 'grooming' side of things. Let her get used to things bit by bit starting at low intensity.

My boy's 7.5 mo (RR) and I bathed him in the bath tub yesterday (with rubber mats). It was his second intro to having a bath (RR's don't need them very often and the first bath was just to intro him to it). Rubber mats so he'd not slip and so he'd feel secure. In our 'tripping around' when we've been out and about seeing and getting used to the world, we passed by a mobile groomer who was doing a job elsewhere and asked if she'd help out by letting him be exposed to such things. He met her, went inside the grooming trailer and then with us at a bit of a distance, she started up the blower dryer.

Slow and steady wins the race.

I would use something other than wool wash too. Too much of a detergent for my liking, be it on a pup or adult dog.

That is very good information :(

Very cute little girl.

I love wool wash, it brings my poodles up all fluffy, not sure thats the effect you desire though.

Its fine as long as its diluted well & not used all the time. It does kill fleas, its what I use on very young dumped kittens that get thrown in here occasionally , not too strong or toxic as the chemicals on them. Bath her yourself until she is fully vaccinated, safer.

I would vote for Aloveen too. It is what I use on my babies. On older dogs I use Plush Puppy. I personally would not use wool wash.

You could start in a laundry tub or use a big plastic tub. Mix a bottle with some water and shampoo in it (the mayonnaise or sauce squirt bottles are good) as this will make application of the shampoo easier.

When I was working as a mobile groomer I would wash young puppies for people. I took extra care in disinfecting the bath, and did not let the pups touch other parts of the trailer. Probably more cautious than I needed to be, but I took a 'just in case' attitude with other peoples young ones. If you want to use a groomer, try and get a recommendation for a good one in your area and talk to them beforehand about this being puppy's first bath and how you want to ease the pup into the experience. You can provide you own shampoo for them to use if you wish.

By 3 months my own babies are well used to baths. I have a 12 week old girl here at the moment and she had a bath and blow dry today. She is an absolute pro at it and takes it all in her stride
