GoldenWei
Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on the Agility classes that are run up at Castle Hill on Thursday nights. I'm thinking of getting my 2 year old golden into Agility, just for fun at the moment, don't think I could remember all the obstacles in order to trial. I know that there are a few places around, just wondering what peoples thoughts are on the one at Castle Hill, are here better places to go? And do they start back this week? Phoenix is a raw beginner.
Kavik
I think most clubs start back in February. The last time I went to Castle Hill it was rather busy. If your dog is social and doesn't mind lots of other dogs around and has a good recall you could give it a go. You can always go once without the dog to watch first. I am going to watch another club in Feb to see if I want to try it out. There is also: Paws 4 Fun - Eric Mobbs Reserve, Excelsior Rd, Castle Hill - Sunday afternoons http://www.paws4fun.org.au/ Parramatta International Canine Sports Inc. - Dan Mahoney Oval, Gladstone St, North Parramatta - Friday Evening http://www.picsi.org.au/ Canine Fun Sports - St Ives Showground - Tuesday and Friday mornings http://www.caninefunsports.com.au/Canine%20Fun%20Sports.htm
GoldenWei
Thanks for the info Kavik. I might go up and have a look on Thursday night and also the one at Baulkham Hills. I'd prefer to take him on a weekday evening though, that why I like the idea of Thursday nights, however if there are heaps of dogs up there we might be better off somewhere else. He is fine with other dogs, I'd just prefer smaller classes.
smisch
When I was going to castle Hill, it was large classes.. Dependant on how many people turned up it was a tad annoying as you sometimes got a heap of training done and sometimes not alot.. I have heard some great feedback of Paws4fun! GoldenWei
thanks smisch. Will have a look at both of them, but I'd much prefer smaller classes, so sounds like Paws4Fun might be the way to go.

poocow
I'm moving to Dural soon so I might come and try out Paws 4 Fun - I went to Castle Hill on Thurs when I first started and I really didn't like it, too busy and not enough time actually training. I currently go to Manly on Sat mornings and love it there, but its a bit far to travel every week once I move, so might make it a fortnightly thing. Guest PixieOfWrath
Does Paws 4 Fun still do all the obedience stuff first or have they changed their format a bit..? I started with Brody about a year ago but I wanted to do agility, not obedience, and they were requiring amazing levels of obedience training before you even got to LOOK at any agility equipment. It wasn't a class-taught situation either, everyone just stood around in a circle doing their own thing with clickers... in the end I got bored and stopped going after a few months, as if I wanted to train him for obedience, I'd be going to obedience club I was pretty disappointed with the whole thing actually.. Kavik
Nope you don't need to do any obedience at Paws 4 Fun
poocow
Nope you don't need to do any obedience at Paws 4 Fun Ahh ok, so if I turned up with Darcy I could just slot into the higher levels?
Kavik
Not sure about levels, you'd have to talk to them about that. I managed to talk my way into intermediate after being in beginners for a couple of weeks and being much more advanced than the beginners. I was supposed to be able to do contact equipment to go up but it was hard to convince them to get the contact equipment out for the beginners. Darcy will get bored though and start barking
Kavik
Kaos barks too if he gets bored What can Darcy do? Can he do the contact equipment? Maybe if you explain where you have gone before and what you have done at other clubs they will put you in intermediate? They give you a chance to practice the contact equipment in intermediate. Yeah he can do contact equipment, the only thing hes dodgy on is weavers - mostly because I haven't got the room at my current house to practice them. Hes good with front and back crosses. Oh he doesn't do the see saw yet though, hes scared of that, even on the ground Had to reaffirm the dog walk because of his see saw phobia! Kavik
You should be OK then. I was supposed to be able to weave too - have now got that down pat but didn't yet when I went to intermediate. We can't do seesaw yet either - have just gotten one for Christmas, so can now start training it at home. When they did a class that involved a lot of weaving, I asked if I could go and practice weaving on my own outside the class using the stick in the ground poles they have, and that was OK. Once I could do a 3 pole entry, I asked to do that instead of a whole row of weaves in class, which was also OK. You just have to ask if you want to do something different, and hope they are OK with it
poocow
Ahh ok cool, I'm hoping once we move I'll be able to get his weaving down pat, hes ok if we go really slow, but thats not really good in a trial!
Guest PixieOfWrath
Seriously Kavik they've changed it? So the last time when I had to spend weeks clicker training down, sit, stand, change of position from a distance, heeling, attention, touch and place - that wouldn't happen if I joined up again?
Kavik
I joined up mid/late last year, and have never been asked to do any obedience I wouldn't have gone if I did as like you I joined to do agility not obedience. I assume your dogs can do the little obedience needed for agility - sit, stay, recall, drop
