megan_ Posted January 27, 2009 Share Posted January 27, 2009 I fond a flea on Fergus on Sunday and put on a vial of Frontline Plus (a lot went on his fur as he was squirming). I noticed that he is still scratching like crazy this evening. Is Frontline Plus any good? Is there anything else that I can give him to get rid of the little buggers (I don't want to expose him to too many chemicals, but I do want to kill the fleas asap). DMA Posted January 27, 2009 Share Posted January 27, 2009 (edited) I use Frontline on all four of my dogs & it's usually great. The thing is, though, you've got to use it every month. In the case of a dog already infected with fleas, as I've had done in the past when I switched to Frontline, you may have to use Frontline in conjunction with a more immediate treatment such as flea powder, flea shampoo, &/ or a short dose of pills such as Capstar. Danois Posted January 27, 2009 Share Posted January 27, 2009 I found the Frontline useles too and my vet recommended Advantage. I am using this in conjunction with Capstar every 2-3 days. Fleas are bad around here at the moment (as I watch doofus sitting on the arm of the armchair scratching). A few in the dane thread have been talking about washing dogs in eucalyptus wool wash. goldens Posted January 27, 2009 Share Posted January 27, 2009 I used Frontline Plus for years and was happy with it---til 2 years ago. I used Advanage and it worked for a short time. This past summer, none of the topicals worked and I saw more posts on different forums saying same thing. This past sumer I went with a chewable,Comfortis, which worked great for fleas. Crisovar Posted January 27, 2009 Share Posted January 27, 2009 He may be scratching because he is sensitive to the bites and not because he still has fleas, check him before you dose him with more stuff. Some dogs with flea bite allergy only need one flea bite to set them off scratching and chewing. If he has no fleas, wash him in a soothing shampoo like Aloveen. I don't know about down there, but here in the states, vets are seeing more and more cancer in dogs and also more and more autoimmune diseases--I lost my 4 yer old golden retriever to autoimmune hemolytc anemia and liver damage brought on by ProHeart6 back in 2003. At that time my vet was seeing a case every year to year and half. Now he sees several a year and he believes dogs are getting to many vaccinations, on top of heartworm prevention (that is a MUST year around here where we live on the Teaxs coast) and flea stuff.And then so many have allergies and get steroids for thgat, low thyroid, etc, just steady stream of drugs into their body. He has gone to 3 year vaccinations and avoiding some like Lyme and Lepto unless requestee by dog owner. There has been no cases of LYme down ere and only one case of Lepto. Also, many on the forums I belong to have started going 40 to 45 days between giving heatwrm prevention pills. From what I undestand, the pills only stay in their system about 24 hour. Each dose is more of a "deworming" than actual prevention. It kills all any that the dog picks up since last pill. An it takes 45 or more days before they are of a stage the Interceptor will not kill them. People are trying to cut back on drugs and this is one way they feel safe. I still givethe pill on the lst of each month--scared I would forget if it was on different days each month. PS I forgot to say that besides the recall of ProHeart6 after it killed so many dogs the 3 years it was out before, there are mnay that will not use it since it's return last summer because they do not want the drug in their dog's body for 6 months--or they say possibily 8 months.
