frank the tank's mum Posted January 27, 2009 Share Posted January 27, 2009 (edited) Hi All I'm new to the forums and have a 14 month old male staffy called Frank. He's been being a bit naughty lately, can you guys give me some advice?? Frank does this weird thing where he goes to the toilet inside overnight even though he can get outside! He never goes inside when we're awake so I just don't know why he's doing it. Most of the time it's on tiles but it's still driving me nuts! I'm sure I'm being naughty letting him come in at night but he tends to cry when we leave him outside... Has anything like this ever happened to any of you? Teebs Posted January 27, 2009 Share Posted January 27, 2009 Take him back to toilet training, crate him, get up once in the middle of the night and let him out My staffy did the same, was toilet trained, then out of no where went to going inside. If you would like to keep him inside overnight and get him fully toilet trained than I suggest having the crate inside. Take him outside for a toilet break just before you go to bed than once again in the middle of the night say around 2 or 3 am, but if you hear him sooking it could also be because he needs to go outside for another toilet break so take him then too just in case. You will find in no time he will get used to this procedure. I think if you put the crate outside its not teaching him not to "potty" inside, its only teaching him not to potty inside the crate, so unless you want to end up having him crated everynight i dont think it would work. They get used to going straight outside for potty as soon as you open the crate and thats how its always worked for me in the past and eventually you can trust them not to potty inside the house as they will generally go and try to get out the door to go outside. I've had the issue where Max is doing it near the back door right in front of the doggie door rather than go outside through the dog door which is equally frustrating! I think I'll go the inside option as I really do want him to be able to sleep inside. We're in Canberra so leaving him outside every night in Winter seems too mean! Hi Stella, Frank is not desexed, I did wonder whether that might have something to do with it... He tends mainly to go in two places, he does his number 1s against my favourite piece of furniture, and then his number 2s in our spare bedroom. We always leave the back door open so he can get out but he continues to go inside, very frustrating indeed. The thing about desexing him, I have had him booked in twice but have pulled out because he just has the most awesome personality and I worry it might change him.
