Fish Oil

It can help with dry skin and some people use it every day. I find if I give it to my Cavalier every day she gets the runs! So she has 3 times a week. I think you need to add it gradually...not the whole capsule at once

Hi my dogs get one fish oil capsule a day, they all line up and get their capsule after they have finished their dinner

Hi my dogs get one fish oil capsule a day, they all line up and get their capsule after they have finished their dinner :happydance2:

:) I do this NOW.

I used to carefully squeeze the capsules into his barf mix :( . Then one day he seemed very interested in the capsule, so I thought I would shut him up and gave it to him. He loved it :happydance2:

Mine all get one fish oil cap a day, unless they are having fish that day. My older girl Cleo started getting bad dandruff on her back - the accupuncturist said it was due, in part, to lack of circulation in the back muscles. She told me to massage the area daily and up the fish oil dosage - now Cleo gets one cap in the morning and two at night (was told she can have up to 6 per day if needed). Don't know if it's the massage or the fish oil or both, but the dandruff was gone in a matter of days. ;)

My 16m golden has two per night in cut open in his dinner and my 13.5w golden (who has dandruff) has two at night and an Evening Primrose in his breakfast.

His dandruff is actually getting better now on the EPO? Goodness only knows why, thought the fish oil would do it but no, def. improvement since adding the EPO. ;)

My young pups breeder told me to cut them open as the dogs have shorter digestive tract than us and the capsule and oil cannot be absorbed sufficiently before being expelled out the other end. I have no idea if this is true but now cut them open and drizzle the oil over their food.

Ok this is going to be a little basic but here goes!

Fish Oil contains DHA/EPA while Evening Primrose contains GLA. These three are all essential fatty acids OMEGA 3, - 6 & 9! Thus an Omega Oil rather than Omega 3 Fish Oil if best to give to both humans and dogs that have issues with their skin/hair etc, etc.

Borage Oil, Flaxseed Oil etc contain even more GLA than EPO.

There are Dog Specific Omega Oils that you can obtain through vets - MegaDerm or Omega Blend by Vets All Natural! But Health food shops also sell human grade omega blends like MegaOil that contains the ratio that you are looking for in an omega blend oil!

Megaderm Ingredients

Sunflower oil, gamma-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, retinyl palmitate, dl-alpha-tocopheryl acetate, biotin, pyridoxine hydrochloride, zinc sulfate monohydrate, inositol.

Vets All Natural Omega Blend Ingredients

cold pressed Flax Seed Oil, Shark Liver Oil, Sunflower Oil, and Wheat Germ Oil

Mega Oil Ingredients Oil Ratio 2:1:1 of Omega 3, 6 and 9.

Flaxseed Oil, Soybean Seed Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, Borage Oil (15ml GLA) Safflower Seed Oil, Sunflower Seed Oil, Sesame Seed Oil, Pumpkinseed Oil.

Hope this helps!!!

Both my Goldens 2yrs and 3yrs get Flaxseed oil. I give 1 table spoon every night. Have been giving dogs flaxseed oil for a few yrs now. One i got once from a health food shop gave the dogs farts non stop for days! It was horrible. I think it was called mega oil or something like that. Cant remember the brand name, but probably wouldnt get it. The one they get now they havent had farts at all which is terrific!

Zoe my 2yr old, has poor coat so i am trying to improve her coat.

I tried Omega Blend by VAN but it gave my 3yr old Charlotte the runs. So they both get human grade flaxseed oil and Zoe's skin and coat seems to be improving.

In my reading, Omega's are only part of the picture. Daily selenium and zinc (both trace nutrients that are scarce in Australias well-weathered landmass and widely defiecient in animal diets; neither is stored in the body) intake can have a big effect on coat.

SG - what types of supplements are there for selenium & zinc and is there a guide per kgs for supplement amount required? Or if your feeding a super premium dry food would that contain enough of these nutrients? Or would you only need to supplement if feeding raw food only? ;)

Sorry for all the questions but even if you could post links re these issues that would be fantastic!
