Hello all,

My first post here, hope somebody can clear my questions.

I've purchased a 10wk old beagle puppy just today and picked them up from a breeder. And was needing some advice.

1. is it normal for them to sleep a lot? He tends to wake up for 1-2 hrs to play/eat etc, then go back to sleep.

Probably cycled through 3-4 times today!!

2. He makes some whinging noise when he wants to pee. But other times, he doesn't pee. How do I know when's the right time because i don't want to bring him out of his little area just because he whinges.

And does he whinge because he's not used to the environment?

Here are some photos:

Would appreciate any advice!. Thanks!!

The sleeping is normal, he is only a baby and will tire reasonably easily

As for toilet training - I take them out after each meal/drink, after play, after they wake up and if I can see them sniffing or looking for a 'spot'. If you suspect he needs to go to the toilet, and he is whining, take him out but ignore him. Put him outside on the grass and give him a command to "go toilet" or "go wees" or similar - if he does toilet give him lots of praise, if he doesn't, calmly put him back in his play pen

As what Huski said.. The sleeping is TOTALLY normal. As the pup gets older he will sleep less. A sleeping pup is a good pup!

Try and be as regular as you can about taking him out to pee. He needs to be supervised all the time to make sure that he doesn't have an accident in the house, so don't let him have free run of the house or anything (I see that he's in a puppy pen, so that's good!). If you see him sniffing the ground or looking like he needs to pee (you'll get to know what that behaviour looks like), whisk him outside to the area you want him to toilet on. Don't play or make a fuss but once he pees celebrate like it's the BEST thing on earth! You want to make peeing outside a positive, happy experience. As Huski suggested you can also use a word for toileting, so that later on you can get him to toilet on cue - all you need to do is say the word when he's toileting (same word for pee and poop). The less accidents your pup has the faster he is going to learn.

What's his name?!

EDT - re: puppy pads, I'm not a big fan. The pups do chew them, they are expensive and you could just get away with newspaper if that's the way you wanted to go. Personally I crate my puppies at night and take them out to toilet every 2-3 hours at 8-10 weeks. As they get older they get taken out less and less. By about 12 weeks they were both sleeping through the night. There are lots of threads on crate training and a lot of info online... Some people don't like it, but a lot of people on DOL swear by it (including me!). It really helps with the toileting as the pup only learns to toilet outside, rather than getting confused with the sometimes inside on newspaper, other times outside on the grass.

I completely agree - I have done the news paper on the floor overnight, but it is a pain to then teach the dog to go outside - I would prefer to just get up every few hours for a couple of weeks than have the trouble of teaching the dog to go from the paper to outside.

OMG Beagle Puppy

Right, now that I've got that out of my system  I can only support what others have said. However, I did have a paper trained pup already so put him in an open crate in the laundry with lots of newspaper. I slowly reduced the amount of paper each night but he only soiled it about 4 times in 2 weeks then never again....he was only 8 weeks old but very mature for his age.

The saddest thing about Beagles puppies is that eventually they DO grow into their ears

His name is Bobby.

Well he's had 1 accident inside his pen. I wasn't sure if he really wanted to go.......

I am planning to get a crate for him tomorrow to start crate training. But i'm just worried about him peeing in his own crate over the night if one forgets to let him out to pee.

What would they do? would they hold on to the pee?

and if it were 2-3 hours, would that mean 3 times during the night to let him out to pee?

To "the spotted devil", what do you mean by growing into their Ears??

Why the eye rolling? It's a comment on how gorgeous floppy eared puppies are with their gigantic ears (that's what the love heart icons were for)....I've got a Dally so I've been down that road. You know they're all grown up when their ears are in proportion to their head!

You have a couple of options with the peeing during the night - you can either have the crate next to your bed and you'll hear puppy get restless if you're a light sleeper. Otherwise you can just set your alarm for once in the night - for example if puppy has a wee at 10pm when you go to bed, then get up at maybe 2am, then get up at 6am

I used to set an alarm and wake my pup up to pee every 3 hours. Then I would just extend this time out longer and longer over the next few weeks. Of course if the pup was whining to get out between then I would also take them.

When you buy your crate, make sure it is the right size for when Bobby is an adult (cute name by the way!!!!!!). A pup won't (usually) pee in his crate when it is just big enough for him to turn around and lie down in as a pup naturally doesn't want to pee where he sleeps. Now the size he will need at 10 weeks is obviously going to be much smaller than the size he will need as an adult, so you can either buy a crate that has a divider, or put a partition in there yourself using cardboard or a box or some perspex (or similar). Then as he grows, move the petition so that his space grows with him. He shouldn't pee in his area if this space is the right size.

Thanks for the advice, i will get a crate for him tomorrow. (Should have got it today actually!!)

As for tonight, I can only leave him inside his pen, and hopefully get up to let you pee....

Bobby is gorgeous. May I suggest that for tonight when he sleeps in his pen... that you downsize his pen it a bit, so it only includes his bedding, so in essence it is a similar size to a crate for him. As others have said, I would wake up atleast once through the night (depending on what time you last empty him before you go to bed, and what time you get up to first empty him). Being a 10 week old male, he is actually old enough to hang on over night (approx 11pm - 6.00am), but as he has just recently come home, and also is yet to be trained into his new environment and new routine you will have for him, I would expect to take anything from a couple of nights to a week or 2 until you can stretch him to sleep right through confidently with no slip ups.

They are all so different. Best of luck with the new baby. :)

So how did Bobby go last night???

Well i think it was alright - but to be honest, i wasn't really sleeping, worried that he may pee inside his pen!

So i pretty much woke up every hour or two, but I took him out at about 3am and he peed a little which was good. And he did it again at 6ish.

After that, I given him his breakky then he went to poop for the first time. But as he went in, he still had a another poop to go, so......there was a poop accident...

More to come I guess...!

:mad He is GORGEOUS! Hope everything is going well. With our pups the only time they have had an accident in their crate was when we were out a bit longer than we expected and one of them had runny poos :-( and that has been it. We did as others have suggested with timing after meals etc and the pups would tell us at night when they needed to go out - basically attention seeking whinging would settle down after a few minutes toilet whinging would escalate. Also we took our out on a lead for the first few weeks, toilet and straight back to bed, otherwise they would be running around the yard and me with my bed hair and jimmie jammies running after them

Thanks for your compliment, I have to thank all the people here as without these advice, i'm not sure where to go!

Today's update:

He seems to be able to hold much longer than I expected now, probably 4-5 hrs? as the last time he peed, and it was lots!

Now, i've been taking him to the grass area to pee and poop. I say "pee pee" before he does it and also give him a treat.

However, never had a chance to say "poo poo", because I can't never tell he is going to poop until he does it.

Also, should I limit where he pees/poops on the grass? as I can't seem to find a good way to do that without getting myself peed on

Don't worry about using a cue for poops and a cue for pee. Use the same word.

If you want him to toilet in one area of the yard, yes restrict him to where he goes now. You can do this by putting him on a lead when you take him out to toilet or carry him back to the same area if he wanders off.

We just say toilet for everything and have also found that by poopa scooping the messes and taking them to a particualr area of the yard they always go to that area. We do have a high rainfall and very active dung beetles so it's not an issue for us to have an area of grass to dump doggy doo-doo.

Well our grass area ain't that big either, just thought i'd be good training for it to poop in one area. Pee is alright anywhere i guess, as long as its in the grass.

He does his smelling action before he poop/pee, so when he does that I pick him up to the spot of preference?
