violet
this is going to sound strange, but my 16 week old cavalier puppy, Violet, has now had several incidences where she has rolled over onto her back and started weeing on herself. she gets quite wet and it is very messy when this happens it generally happens when she is a bit excited. the first time, my mother had come back into the lounge room after a parcel had been delivered, the second time a friend of mine was over and Violet was happy to see her, etc. its happened 3 times now, and im just curious, has anyone else's dog ever done this? i know a dog rolling onto their back can be a sign of submission, and also that some dogs pee when they are over-excited. however i've never heard of that happening in tandem! should i be concerned, or is it just a little odd quirk my dog has developed? also, i've been trying not to make a big deal of it, just cleaning up the mess and giving her a wash, and trying not to fuss too much. is this the right response? Dogsfevr
This is very common. The most important thing is to ignore her when re entering, guests come etc etc. Ask all friends to walk straight in & ignore.Dont fuss or over excite Most dog grow out of it if you follow the regime but a small few do it for life & it can become a pain
violet
ok thanks for that. i knew they peed in excitement, but its just the fact she's on her back that i find strange, but you make a good point, she'd probalby have no control of it, poor thing. we try to tell people not to make a fuss before we let them into the doggy areas, but often its a case of 'awwwwwww isn't she cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuttttteeeeeeeeee' super enthusiasm particularly if it is my aunt, doesnt matter if i tell her, the dogs asleep in her crate, please don't disturb her, she starts shrieking at the top of her lungs. not helpful. and i can't do anything about them coming over, its my parents house. i have been trying to make violet sit when i know visitors are coming in, so she doesn't jump up, and get hyperactive, and also have been distracting her with treats and toys, so I'll start trying to be more vigilant about it and make sure no one fusses about her when we walk in the door. if we can stop her doing it...that would certainly be preferable! megan_
my dog used to do this when he was young. Sometimes people would get down to give him a tummy rub...and they'd get wee'd on
becks
They do grow out of it. Best to have people follow the rule of coming into the house with the weeks shopping with the eggs balanced on top! ie so give the dog a couple of minutes of ignoring and then when the dog is calm and doing theire own thing, take her outside for a quick hello play. One of mine used to do this and now she has the strongest bladder of the lot and can hold on all day if it's raining and she won't go out!
Dogsfevr
My print this off & show your aunt. She needs to understand that whilst its cute its not helping your pup but reinforcing the behaviour that you reaaly want to not encourage . They often dont see it as an issue as they walk in & then leave but she needs to understand that her actions arent helping the pup at all & it isnt fair on the pup
