Peter71
Two weeks ago our labrador had a dewclaw removed as it was infected etc. Last week our lab damaged its other dewclaw and it looks as though that now needs to be removed. This results in two general anaesthetics within a short period. Should my vet have suggested to me that all dew claws are removed in the first instance? Gretel
Oh dear poor dog! A huge number of dogs go through their whole lives with dew claws and no problems so I don't think your vet could have foreseen this unless they have a crystal ball. alanglen
Unless they had a crystal ball, then no! It's pretty uncommon labradors have problems with their dew claws, in my opinion.
peigirl
Personally if my dog was under getting one done I would have done the other at the same time. Hindsight however, is a wonderful thing!
Charles Kuntz
I don't believe the vet should have removed the other dewclaw. It is unnecessary surgery in most cases and he could not have predicted that this would happen. On the anaesthesia side, we commonly anaesthetise geriatric pateints (12-15 years of age) 15 or 20 days in a row for radiation therapy with no problems. Thousands of dogs have been adminstered radiation therapy in this fashion for decades. Hope this allays your fears. Charles
