my monster Spot got to a cooked chicken carcass [left on the kitchen bench by my boyfriends brother] while i was out at an interview, and ate the whole thing!!

came home to about 10,000 meat ants trailing through the dog door, down the passage, into the kitchen and onto the empty packet [yay another ant infestation...]

hes not showing any signs of bones being stuck or anything, but if anything does go wrong, what should I look for??

Abdominal pain; pain on defecation; blood in stools. I'm not a Vet so there might be other symptoms that I don't know about, but these would be IMO the general ones to look out for. Hopefully you'll find there are no problems. Agree that cooked bones are not good to give for the reason we are all aware of, however when I was young and this information was not so well known, we gave cooked bones all the time and never had a problem. I'm not saying it's therefore ok to give cooked bones, just saying that you can be lucky .

Hope everything proves to be ok.

Hopefully it will pass through without problems. He will probably be bloated and producing yucky smells for a while.

Fast him for the next day or so. And expect him to probably drink more water and blob around like anyone that has over indulged.

As Erny said if he starts having problems going to the toilet or has blood in his poo then you may have a problem and a vet trip would be advised.

Genuine question, but why "fast"? Wouldn't giving some (eg) mushy food (as opposed to sloppy) actually help by 'cushioning' the process of the cooked bone through the system?

I'd be concerned about the cooked bones but not the quantity. One chook carcass isn't a great deal for a Cattle X so I wouldn't bother fasting. My 38kg male will eat a couple of them in one hit no problems. Come to think of it my pup eats a whole carcarss in one hit too. The cooked bones would definitely make me wary though. I'd be more inclined to give something which might help make a smooth 'exit'. Best bet, call your vet!

Penny has had a few bowel blockages. I am always aware of her bowel movements. Alarm bells ring if I see her straining and not producing anything, especially if she whines and stops straining only to go back to it a few minutes later. That will keep happening, and she'll cry or whine as she strains. She will also be tender in the abdomen and around her bottom. I try parafin first and give it a day. After that it's straight to the vet if she's still having trouble. It's not like you can be unaware of it, really. You know they are in distress and why.

Let's hope you're lucky. Last time Penny got to some cooked bones she ended up having to be put under for a serious enema. She was not a happy girl. She's prone to it, though.
