dogon Posted January 16, 2009 Share Posted January 16, 2009 My puppy is so not into his food. He now only eats it in the morning and barely touches it at night. I use Eukenuba and stupidly bought a 20kg bag from the breeder who told me that pup will LOVE it!!! Talk about money down the drain I've followed advice and removed the food after 15 minutes. I only feed morning and night now and I do wet it to 'release the flavour'. What should I do? I do use treats during the day (boiled chicken, cheese and sometimes sausage but in small pieces) I did begin by using the Eukenuba treats and also the kibble from his meals but he very quickly lost interest and so I needed to use something else for training. Do people out there find this to be a common problem? Should I give up and switch to something else? I feel like i have just thrown money away! Chop up some nice juicy chicken necks and mix them through the food, or some tinned sardines in oil. They get a variety of raw meaty bones (mostly chicken and lamb), raw mince, veges, eggs, cheese etc. mixed up and frozen in meal sized portions, chicken necks mixed with veges and tinned fish, or kibble and sardines. I use kibble as training treats, they so rarely get it for a meal that they'll work for it in training, and special treats are leftover bbq sausage, steak etc which I freeze and just take out in small portions. I would suggest varying the pups diet and introduce kibble back in a different form (mixed with tinned sardines goes down a treat here) just every now and then. If you're worried about the kibble going "off" it would freeze OK in smaller portions...maybe in ice cream containers if you have the space. smooch Posted January 16, 2009 Share Posted January 16, 2009 Smooch would never eat dog food, I now cook chicken mince, with either vegies, rice or pasta. and when I can get them I get meaty bones, cut off the meat and cook this with the above, he also gets half a turkey neck (gets this every night). I got the bag from the breeder so poor fool me Still, ask the breeder if Eukanuba has a money back guaranee or ask them if they will buy it back for their own use as your pup won't eat it. Really don't see the point in making a puppy's diet something it doesn't like. But then again.... how long have you had the pup? I would for now, leave off with the training/treats for a week and concentrate on getting the pup to eat proper meals, then go back to training. dogon Posted January 19, 2009 Author Share Posted January 19, 2009 Hi becks, he's almost 12 weeks. I have just had a couple of days now where I have offered him nothing but kibble for training. This kibble is left over from what he doesnt eat in the morning. By night time he's been happy with his food - which is a relief. I've also been giving him 10 minutes to finish, if not it's gone and this is working well. As others have pointed out I've obviously been spoiling him with other foods. poochmad Posted January 22, 2009 Share Posted January 22, 2009 (edited) Another good trick I learnt on here is to heat the kibble up as it makes it more inviting. Our pup gets mostly kibble (but three types mixed in, that he is used to and likes), mixed with Omega oil (for his coat), or sardines, bit of egg yolk, a bit of cheese, beef stock (little bit for taste), cooked meat (whatever we've had, sausages, lamb, steak, etc), vegetables - he loves raw carrot or mixed frozen vegies. All of the above is randomly selected so each meal is 'new'. He loves it and his coat and body mass is looking fantastic. He also gets chicken wings, liver and beefhides for treats.
