Cat
I give my dog plenty of water when i am not home, but he doesn't really drink much and I suspect it's because he is drinking out of a small fish pond instead. I know it is not the cleanest option but just wondered if people thought it could be harmful or if it is ok.
Anna H
It's probably ok... especially if your fish are all really healthy and doing well. Fish die off pretty quick in unhealthy water.

I know it is not the cleanest option but just wondered if people thought it could be harmful or if it is ok. iS IT LIKE AN DECORATIVE FISH POND IN THE YARD? hERE IN tEXAS WE HAVE WHAT WE CALL FISH PONDS THAT ARE ACTUALY JUST PONDS FOR CATTLE, ETC TO DRINK FROM, BUT ALWAYS END UP WITH FISH IN THEM. a COUPLE OF YEARS AGO THERE WERE SEVERAL REPORTS OF DOGS DYING AFTER BEING IN SOME OF THOSE POND CONTAMINATED WIH WHAT THEY CALLED BLUE ALGEA. iT WAS SUSPECTED IN THE DEATH OF ONE OF THE GOLDENS ON ONE OF THE GODEN RETRIEVER FORUMS i BELONG TO. bUT YOU MAY NOT EVEN HAVE IT DOWN THERE. wE GREW UP HUNTING QUAIL AND OUR DOGS, ENGLISH SETTERS AND ENGLISH POINTERS, DRANK FROM STREAMS, FISH PONDS, ALL THEIR LIVES WHILE WE WERE HUNTING, AND NONE EVER GOT SICK OR HAD A PROBLEM, SO i REALLY THINK YOU DOG SHOULD BE JUST FINE. Kavik
When I lived with my parents the dogs always preferred the water from the fish pond to the clean water in their bowl
Ravyk
i dont think its too bad for dogs, if there are any nasties in the water the fish would die first! the bacteria in the water is probably good for them to an extent
Garden Girl
What is it with dogs? - I refill my dogs' water bowl at least a couple of times a day but given half a chance they'd drink water from the (salt water) pool, the clam shell or any other water source. Isometimes think about making a little inground pond in the back yard for them to swim in and drink from.
noisymina
An old timer once told me that if a dog drinks from your pool, take it as a compliment 'cause it means the water is OK! Yeh - mine drinks from dirty buckets, horse troughs, fish pond, the dams, puddles in the driveway after rain etc etc. All our dogs have done this over about 28 years and never once have they come to harm. Don't worry about it. Sometimes I suspect they may get trace elements they need from drinking the muddy water.
moggy
Mine drink from our water feature even though they have fresh water in their bowls. Can't figure them out!!!
Cat
Thanks everyone. I thought it was ok, but just wanted to make sure. Good to see that mine isn't the only one with this problem too!
sandgrubber
Pond water is great!!! We don't understand this human thing about "clean" water. signed Monica, Jarrah, Molly and Rainey sorry there aren't any paw print smileys available.
Tilly
Our boy also drinks out of the fish pond. He has buckets of water but still prefers the pond. Just be careful if you treat the pond with anything. We treated the pond for an algae outbreak and had to ensure the pond was fully covered so he couldn't drink the water ... while the chemicals were "fish safe" I didn't want to take the risk.
