Leaving One Dog To Take Another Out

 Share

Recommended Posts

Both my dogs are used to going out together, never have reason to leave one at home. Since Ruger has been disabled somewhat and not allowed to walk, I feel for Fly as I havnt been able to get her out.

Ruger will carry on a TREAT if he is left and he knows we are going out. Fly carry's on the same but has been left by herself when I can trick her or she doesnt hear us leaving. She is still very upset though and barks, cry's etc when I go.

How do I go about fixing this?

Start small, Ed is the same, and I need to start doing it with him too

Small amounts of time, and come and go like its no big deal, also dont come back if he is in the middle of a tanty, or if you cant avoid it, dont let him out until he settles,

Already some great advice

I used to give the dog that is left behind a raw meaty bone to chew while we are gone. It made a huge difference

Part of me says "leave some sort of treat so that they view alone time as positive".

A bigger part of me says "he is a dog. He has to get used to it. Take the other dog out, no big deal. He will settle and he'll be a better dog for it" (ie more confident on his own, less jealous etc).

  • 2 weeks later...

I misread the title as having something to do with hit-dogs as well. ;)

My dogs do the same, the trainer said it is a good idea to take them out seperately so that they're accustomed to it. I must admit, easier said than done, as I had completely forgotten this instruction till I read this thread.

I don't see the harm in giving Ruger a bone while you take Fly out.

I know what you mean Ruger!

Daisy doesn't have separation anxiety. she doesn't get destructive and she settles down eventually, and has no worries being by herself when I take her out on her own.

However.

She gets very put out when I take Micha somewhere without her. It's like she doesn't want to miss out - if I walk them one after the other (which I do regularly when I am home by myself) I have to take Daisy first so she is at least a bit tired out when I take Micha - usually she still cries/barks for a bit when we leave, unless I have distracted her with food. And we have another dog at home! I do think she gets bored without having Micha to play with as Cherry doesn't play with her.

When I took Micha to the K9 Force Training weekend, I got my sister to take Daisy for a walk around the block when we were putting Micha in the car and driving away. It didn't make a difference, she still got upset and wanted to turn around and see where Micha was going. She searched for him desperately when she got home and sat at the door and barked/cried. She doesn't care when people leave, and doesn't react the same way if it's Cherry going out - just Micha. I have tried leaving with him for short periods of time etc and it doesn't make a difference - big fuss at the start and then eventually she is less noisy.

She settles eventually but is still a pain in the arse.

yep its exactly like that. Ruger is too stupid, but Fly knows when Im even thinking about going somewhere...

Couldn't you just kill em ;)

Cherry looks relieved when we take Micha and Daisy out and leave her at home

I just did Bella and Brunos first home alone training. Apart from the first minute it went a lot better than I thought it would  .

I had forgotten how easy it is to walk only one dog ;)

We'll keep doing this a few times a week forever, I think, as it's very handy
