Feeding Frozen Food

Recommended Posts

Is there an issue feeding dogs frozen food? I cant remember exactly what it was but someone mentioned 'something' about feeding frozen food - upset tummies or something...I have such a bad memory. I give my dogs chicken ice cubes all the time with no issue.

I have heard of problems with frozen bones but in the hot weather I thought it might be quite nice to chew on a frozen chicken breast or something like that.

I feed my dogs frozen food often and havent had any problems yet

I feed whole frozen rabbits, chicken frames, frozen mince and vegie mix, no problems here

Some dogs will vomit if they've eaten food that is too cold. On a hot day (coz we have so many of those in Tassie lol) I only semi-thaw food for my boy - hasn't bothered him.

Might depend on whether they are gulpers or chewers too...

Most dogs tolerate frozen and cold food well, but some don't and will bring it back up shortly after to re-eat or not.

I've also heard it can be dangerous to some really small dogs, as the frozen food lowers their body temperature too much.

I feed fish frozen all the time, as Fox wont eat it otherwise.

If it is something they will 'chew' on, then I don't think it is a problem. Can actually assist in hot weather and also during teething.

If it is something they are likely/able to swallow down in a 'gulp' then I prefer not .... my Mum used to say to me about taking in things that were too cold and something along the lines of a "chill in the stomach".

So if it is bones, I don't have an issue.

If it is otherwise intended as 'soft' food, I prefer to thaw. If it is thawed but still has that 'frozen' temperature to it, I am inclined to add a bit of hot water to bring it slightly closer to air temp.

I have recently discovered that Sasha prefers her chicken necks frozen, entirely by mistake (I had a few that were still frozen, and thinking that as usual she wouldn't eat them straight away anyway and give them time to thaw, of course she ate them immediately and has ever since).

Fortunately there don't seem to have been any ill side effects at this point, and it certainly got her eating on our hot hot days.
