With the new year it's time to get my dog into obedience school - the last class for last year was around the time she was desexed so we missed that. I'm thinking either Tuggeranong or the Symonston ones. Does anyone have any experience with either of them? At the moment the main difference for me is distance, Tuggeranong is much closer. Are there any pros and cons of either place? thanks

I'd recommend the training classes at the RSPCA in Weston. I found their classes to be more relaxed and enjoyable than traditional obedience training and more focused on practical life skills than preparing your dog for trialling. Their instructors are excellent and seem to have a very good understanding of how different dogs interact/learn. They also have a smaller class environment (max 8 dogs) which is good for dogs that may be easily excited/aroused.

But, if you are looking at obedience trialling, or other dog sports (flyball/agility) then you will need to look at joining one of the obedience clubs.

Both are good. I was an instructor at ACT Companion Dog club - Symonston - until we moved to Yass. You'll find there is a lot of cross-over with instructors amongst the clubs.

We go to Symonston, CDC , with my Samoyed, we have been having a great time there.

Instructors are lovely and I am finding it very good.

I agree with Bear, and not just because I'm being a polite OH :o I have instructed at Symonston and Belconnen.

One thing to keep in mind no matter which club you go to - if you feel that the instructor you have isn't a good fit for you and your dog you can always ask to change to another class.

Edit: There is also cross over between instructors at the RSPCA and at the dog clubs.

thanks for replies. The thing that turned me off the RSPA was their prices, maybe I read it wrong but it seems you get 1 course with them for the price of a year with the other two places, and she's a very social puppy, loves other dogs and people.

And she seems to have a lot of energy. I thought lhasas were supposed to be couch potatoes. ha ha. when we go for walks lately (except when it's too hot) she starts galloping. Hilarious except I'm not fit enough or young enough to handle it well. :o So I'd like her to get that extra interaction the clubs apparently have with some sort of play area.

CDC does seem good, but only 7ks to Tuggers is appealing as well. (We live at Calwell).

Hi MissAloof, I live at Gordon, and we've completed beginners at Tuggeranong, with no hassles. The other advantage is that you can use the paddocks as off leash areas whenever you want, so its convenient to have them close by. Obedience is great for mental stimulation, and socialisation. My girl has really enjoyed class.

As a member of both there is some differences between the two clubs.

CDC (Symonston):

CDC is geared more towards the people that want to trial. Classes go up to UDX level.

The foundation work at CDC is much better (in my opinion) for dogs that go on to trial. ie: retrieving etc starts in the lower classes

Access to large off lead area

Also do Flyball / Agilty etc..

Tuggeranonong is geared more towards the "pet people" and having a good, well mannered dog.

They clicker train (only ACT club to do so)

Classes stop at Novice so if you want to trial at Open / UD you will need to move clubs.

Access to large off lead area

Also do Flyball / Agilty etc..

Both are very good clubs and I would happily reccomend either. I am a member of both as I take different dogs to each club depending on what I eventually want to do with them. I also attend Flyball at Tuggeranong.

  • 2 years later...

We were members of CDC despite the hike from Tuggeranong - it was a great club for the D and the facilities are nicer than Tuggeranong if are you are bringing a tag along human.

That said my fiance was a member of the Tuggeranong club and I attended a few training sessions and they seemed very similar to CDC.

I don't think you can go wrong picking from those two.

I go to the Symonston one with little miss Sascha. Have been going there since the beginning of this year. The good thing is that you can use the grounds 24hrs. I know somone who lives out in the Tuggeranong area and goes to the symonston club. Either way I think your dog will have a great time. I have found that Sasha LOVES going every Sunday to socialise and learn new things.

OH and there is a cross over of instructors between the clubs and also the RSPCA. I tried for a while to get my dog into the RSPCA classes but couldn't get in so I then went to the Symonston club.
