Amstaffs4me
I have a suspicion that my girl Rogue may have a UTI. I have an appointment with the vet at 4 pm today so hopefully we'll find out for sure what is going on with her. Its been going on for a couple of days now the first sign that i thought something may be wrong was when she started weeing in her bed. Rogue has been toilet trained now for well over 9 months and hasn't had many accidents at all , the few times that she has its been our fault when we have ignored her asking to go outside. Now every morning she is waking up with her crate bedding soaked , she has only woken me up (shes in our bedroom) once during the night and she had already wet her bed. I was thinking that it was just her maybe pushing the boundries to see what she can get away with and have mainly ignored her accidents until I worked out what may have been bothering her. This morning after letting her out of her 'wet' crate she ran outside like she was busting I watched her and barely a trickle came out , not long after she came back inside and wee'd on the floor (its almost like she can't control it) So wondering if others think this may be a UTI or something else? Also anything I could be doing for her till its time for her appointment?
Staff'n'Toller
If you can grab a clean sample you will make your Vet happy. You don't need a huge amount, catch in a clean baking tray or similar and transfer to a very clean jar or plastic container. Specifically it's good to get a sample right in the middle of your dog weeing but it's difficult with dogs that have UTI's as she may only wee a small amount. Amstaffs4me
Thanks Staff'n'Toller been trying to get a sample she has only been once and was barely a dribble Will keep trying... shes is watching me follow her around with a jar thinking that I have finally lost the plot!
persephone
follow her around with a jar Use a well washed/rinsed serving spoon/soup ladle..... easier than trying to get a jar under a dog
InspectorRex
Easier way is to follow her around with a disposable BBQ Plastic plate and as soon as she squats shove it under her.Get ready to grab the plate the moment she moves and use either a water syring or funnel to get the urine into a speciemn jar or any jar . Having long haired dogs I learnt that to be the most easy way to get a wee specimen from on of the girls. it also helps if someone can lead her on lead around the yard and you then have both hands ready to ge the plate under her. let us know how she gets on. Amstaffs4me
Thanks everyone.. Poor little girl is snoozing now had enough of Mum following her around she hasn't tried to go again . Hoping I'll be able to catch her just before we leave for the vets soon.. Was wondering what else I could use to try and catch a sample but was a bit worried about contaminating it? Will let you know how she goes

Amstaffs4me
Well the vet diagnosed a UTI as we thought so Rogue is on antibiotics for the next 10 days and hopefully this clears it all up! Wasn't able to get a sample for the vet and when we got there the vet stuck a needle into her to try and get a sample but wasn't able to Would have liked to have gotten her urine tested just to be 100% a uti is what we are dealing with. Rogue has hip dysplasia and the vet thinks it may be a case of her holding on too long as sometimes when she goes it is causing her pain  Something we have to keep an eye on and se how we go from here .. And yes Rogue is desexed vjb
CavsRcute
I have a Cavalier who has HD also. In the last 12 months she has had 3 UTI's.The last time they did the bladder tap and found that she had struvite crystals and her PH levels were very high. She also had x-rays for bladder stones but none there. I put her on Cranberry tablets and two weeks later her PH levels were normal and no crystals I have continued this and hopefully there will be no more problems. The tablets stop the bacteria adhering to the bladder wall. Good luck

If ever one of our Collies get UTI I also place them on Nature's Own Cranberry Tablets- 1 per day , and it does help
VJB
Hope Rogue recovers quickly. Heidi had a UTI when she was 15 weeks or so old. Horrible to watch them constantly trying to pee. Good luck

That is my girl She gets UTIs all the time, When she is kenneled at work the girls know she has to get out first before anyone else, and put away last at night, she will NOT pee in her run and usually ends up with a bit of a uti. She got the worse one when i drove back from WA with her the way there was ok, i had places to stay on all nights that had a place for her to run, she wont pee on a lead. On the way home the only place i found that could have her off lead, was at Ezas, i noticed there she was peeing a lot, but she had also spent a long time playing with the hose (and spewing on me, thanks ian! ) When we got home she was up every 30 mins to pee, and she screamed in pain, and only a dribble would come out :D Glad your Vet was able to diagnose UTI. If ever one of our Collies get UTI I also place them on Nature's Own Cranberry Tablets- 1 per day , and it does help and yep. what IR said I have kaos on cranberry tablets before she goes into the kennel, idont do it when she is at home as she can go out as she pleases, but always have her on it if she goes elsewhere! I think someone also told me to try ural (is that what it is called??) and it can help as well Good luck!!
Amstaffs4me
Wow! Thanks everyone for all the feedback .. sounds like Cranberry tablets are the way to go ! Now do i start her on them while she is on the antibiotics or do I wait till she has finished the course? Are they just ones that you get from the chemist? Do I just break it and tip it on her food? Someone also said I should give her some inner health plus capsules .. Has anyone else ever used these on a dog? CavsRcute how old is your girl? The vet mentioned today that dogs with HD often get UTI's frequently as they get older , this worried me as Rogue is only 11 months old

The tablets I have are from the chemist and I started her on them when she was on the antibiotics. The inner health capsules would be to help her bowel...sometimes they can get a gut problem like diarrea(?sp) I just use protexin all the time now. I've never heard about dogs with HD getting more UIT's but I suppose it could happen

Sorry for all the questions I'm just trying to get my head around all of this The vet said that UTI's are more common in dogs with HD as when the dog is sore it tends to get up less to go to the toilet as it know it will hurt so they tend to hold on for longer causing more problems.
