bacismumma
Hi All, Was wondering what all you dog lovers knew about fleas and dogs that love swimming! We recently moved from Sydney up to the coast, close to the beach and also now have a pool The dogs are in there every chance they get and are at the beach swimming every other day. We used to use frontline on them in sydney with no problem but now we are up here, doesnt seem to be doing the job. Is it because we are letting them swim constantly?? Its such a shame that we will have to keep them away from the water so they are not scratching all the time. Help please.

frufru
If your dogs swim every day (and sometimes more than once) a topspot will not work.
Clyde
Frontline should still work as you cant wash off something in your blood stream! Advantage/Advantix would lose efficacy. I am guessing it is simply our lovely summer fleas. PErhaps your neighbours have them etc. Perhaps try giving the dogs a spray down of Permoxin after their bath. Or talk to your vet about Proban. Daxilly
Hi, I had this problem as both of mine love to swim, both summer and winter. I use Sentinel Spectrum (tablet), which covers fleas, heart worm and intestinal worms plus advantix (spot on) for the ticks during tick season. Both act in different ways to stop fleas so if one doesn't work the other should kick in. I phoned Bayer (maker of Advantix) and they said you need to keep dogs dry for 48 hours after application for it to be effective. After that it should still work, if they get wet. This was not mentioned on the pack when I phoned a while back but may be included on the instructions now. I did check with my Vet and she said there was no problem doubling up on the medication as they do act in different ways to rid your dog of fleas. Good Luck
corvus
I have heard a lot of people having problem with the spot treatments lately, even with dogs that don't swim. It's troubling. Just as a heads up, those monthly treatments that do fleas and internal parasites basically turn your dog into a mobile poison excretion unit. If you don't want to kill your garden earthworms wherever the pups poop you might have to be quick about disposing of it. I'm trying to find natural alternatives to loads of chemicals, but I'm not having a lot of luck with that.
megan_
Frontline plus is waterproof but they shouldn't swim for 48 hours after application
