Just been over to see my dad for christmas, and he was telling me that he had to take his dog to the vet today because the dogs penis wouldnt go back in, so at the vet they knocked him out and put it back in, and then desexed him, im pretty sure this wasnt something my dad wanted done but did it anyway believing the vet that it would fix the problem.. now as soon as they got back home the same thing happened and he still has a bit hanging out.. anyway i dont see how desexing can fix this issue and it clearly hasnt fixed anything..

oh i HATE The pink thing coming out!!!

Our desexed boy still has it pop out, if no one is around to help, id call a friend to come or take him to vet.

I know ill laugh at my *naivety* in a few years, but right now, its still ick!!!

It would take time for the testosterone (the boy hormone produced by the testes) to reduce in the dog's blood stream. If it was only desexed today (OMG imagine how much that would cost on Christmas day!) then I would expect the dog's ability to become aroused would be hampered only by sedation and pain. Give him time - it's impossible to say whether it's worked at this stage as he was only desexed today.

It won't prevent it happening but perhaps it would happen less often after desexing. My desexed male can achieve a tie with my entire bitch. It takes a lot of work but he manages eventually.

If your father isn't a breeder of pedigree dogs (which I doubt because he wouldn't have agreed to desexing so readily) then it was probably better that the dog was desexed anyway.

i think it was more a case of him being told it was that it was the cause of the problem (i still cant see how), and him wanting the best for the dog. i personally dont see the need to give him the chop (if it wasnt causing the problem), he is a beautifully behaved dog, we had a golden retriever bitch who was a master escape artist so as a result the yard is now excellently fenced and there isnt a chance in hell of him getting out and getting into trouble.. Im a little annoyed at the whole thing really, i think it was a harsh choice be the vet and there may have been other options.. being christmas day aswell there isnt alot of vets open to choose from either..

A friend of mine has had this problem with his desexed dog quite a few times,he was told by his vet to get the dog to lay on his back and to hold a bag of frozen peas on his penis till it went down.

that wont work. the reason it doesn't go back in is because it dries out and is stuck on the sheath.

I would never do that to my boy!

Desexing is likely to reduce the incidence, but I don't see how it could prevent the problem from happenning at all.

Find a new vet. A nice vet would have showed you how to put it back in, and then scheduled the operation to a normal day, not a public holiday. I would never trust this vet again.

Often a 'nick' needs to be made in the opening of the prepuce,to allow the penis to move freely in& out...

I've got no experience with this other than my own dog but a nick would not help him in his case. His penis stays out too long, sticks to the sheath and won't go back in.

The sheath stretches enough for his whole swollen penis AND his glands to come out (a bit larger than the width of a 50 cent piece) when he is getting jiggy with his teddy, most retracts back in but the last inch on the end dries up before he can get it back in. His licking doesn't help, it's not moist enough. I've found KY a quick, simple, painless solution.

The only thing desexing did was stop him ejaculating everywhere. He's a "big" boy and the phrase "hung like a chihuahua" is a compliment in this household. It almost touches the ground and he can't walk properly when erect :)

He will probably continue to do it for another 2-3 weeks after the desexing, as Blab said, he will still be full of hormones. But if it starts happening again, have a look at the penis and find out if it is too big to go back in or if it just dry. A nick won't help if it is dry and the dog needs to be given a hand getting it back in. KY it up but don't try and shove it back in, do it very gently but if you are not comfortable with that, just put the lube on and let dog do the rest.

If you don't want a vets advice, don't take a dog to a vet or if you are unhappy with the vets suggested course of treatment, then seek a second opinion.

Desexing was the professionals opinion at the time regarding the dog. Just like us, vets would rather be doing anything other than working on Xmas day, even the one's after the $$$

You alright? Sound a bit bitter when it's really not neccessary or helpful to OP.

vets advice is not the be all and end all and some vets will do anything for the extra $$$ that comes with an emergency desexing on christmas day (triple time I believe)

With much respect the majority of vets, not all of them, have ever deaLt with this issue which is painful and uncomforable for the dog to endure, but also painful for us to watch in horror.

A nick in the sheath might help but in most cases the owner needs to be prepared to *gasp* touch the dogs penis.

I have a suggestion.

Take the dog to a vet chiro and get his back checked.

Daire, aka Doodle for this very reason, had his penis out most of the time frfom about 13 weeks until after i saw a vet chiro at about 7mo

If a dogs back is out it can put pressure on the penis causing it to be exposed

Personally i dont think desexing will change it :)

Perhaps the attending vet thought castration=less sexual stimulus= less chance of erectins= less chance of getting stuck?

Fair enuff- however it takes weeks for hormone levels to drop, anyway, and a lot ofbehaviour is learnt/habit... so waiting until it was NOT a public holiday would not have hurt...

Perhaps it was a young vet....

hope dog is ok,anyway :)
