midnightmint
I've just ordered a packet of 50 million (!) Beneficial Nematodes from Ecogrow, to water into my garden to kill flea larvae. The nematodes are basically parasites that attack only insect larvae. Supposedly they do not effect humans or other animals (including birds). Has anyone else tried nematodes? Do they work, and did you have any problems with them? The pack is costing me $110 but that includes $33 courier fee (from Canberra to Sydney Metro). General info on nematodes can be found on Google, such as this link here .. the correct info page on the Australian grower/retailer's site doesnt appear to be working. For anyone else that wants to buy some, Ecogrow were the only Australian seller I could find.. sandgrubber
Possible. But equally possible, a scam or an incomplete truth (eg, they kill fleas but only under certain conditions). I'm frequently reminded of a story my grandfather told me . . . must have happened around 1915 when he was a kid . . . about a product guaranteed to kill every bug in your garden. Cost a whole dollar -- pricey back then. His father ordered it and received two pieces of wood, with instructions "Put bug between pieces of wood. Squish." Good luck. I wish there were better regulation of pet products. Please let us know how it goes. edited to add story and good wishes. midnightmint
What a funny/strange story! Apparently the nematodes were selling quite successfully in the USA some years ago, but their popularity decreased when Fipronyl (Frontline) was released onto the market (because Fipronyl controls flea eggs/larvae as well).
