neorotic Posted December 19, 2008 Share Posted December 19, 2008 (edited) I adopted a dachshund from the pound about 4wks ago and didnt really notice his legs untill i got him home. He walks like a penguin, his legs are very deformed but he has no problem running jumping etc and doesnt seem in pain at all. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about this sort of thing and will it get worse or will he require an op. I will take him to the vets after xmas for their opinion but i thought id ask here first. He is 8mths old. neorotic Posted December 19, 2008 Author Share Posted December 19, 2008 (edited) You know what my dogs get Varicool, he is getting the best but i dont know whether its my eyes or it just seems his feet are turning out alot more as the weeks go on If you run your hand along his leg it is horrible, his bones are just so warped. I would dare say either breeding from parents with poor fronts,bad diet as a youngster(though more inclined to go with breeding) We groom stacks of malts crosses with that front & worse & not one has needed surgery although i would suggest placing the dog on Glucomisine or similar . Although a vet visit would atleast rule out any unknown factors. I would even seek out a good bowen or doggy chiro to take him too Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

puggy_puggy Posted December 19, 2008 Share Posted December 19, 2008 Pretty sure it's a condition called 'Premature closure of the distal ulnar physis (radius curvus)' where the ulner stops growing because a growth plate closes early and the radius continues to grow. This causes the bowing effect you see. Not really much you can do other then operate which will set you back about $2,000 to $2,500, per leg. The operation is supposed to be very successful. Its designed to collect info to help us try to see patterns in the issues dogs suffer with We're asking for everyone who has had or who still has a sick dog to give us a few minutes to answer the questions for us. You will need to re do it for each dog and if its something that's happening now you are able to go back and update the info.
