Baby Dragon
We raw feed my cats on human grade mince. Yesterday we bought a fresh batch (not close to expiry or anything) and fed them last night. When we woke up this morning, the mince had hardly been touched (unusual, because they're used to mince.) My dog normally eats the cat's left overs, so this morning he ate the mince. But then within an hour, he had vomited it all back up again twice. Since vomitting he just hasn't been himself. He's not following me around the house, and just wanting to rest. So I guess there are two issues. Do I need to worry about my dog? Is there anything I can give him to give him back his energy? Do I assume the rest of the mince is bad? I'm hesitant to throw the lot out, it was around $40 worth (2 bulk packs.) Divided up as soon as we got home and then it was frozen. Cockerlover
I would be a bit suss if the cats refused it & the dog vomitted ,i would be starving the dog for 24hrs then put on a light diet, ensuring he has water @ all times ,if he dosnt perk up soon a vet check could be the call.i would be chucking the mince!!! a pets life /health is worth far more than the mince ,imo
poodlefan
Where did you get the mince? It can be "off" without smelling off and it might also (not lawful but it does happen) have been treated with a healthy dose of preservative to redden it up. ETA: I'd ditch it. Two sets of averse reactions aren't worth the risk. Edited December 18, 2008 by poodlefan

Baby Dragon
It was just from the local supermarket. It doesn't smell funny or anything, and it's not close to the use by date. I agree, a pet's health is way more important. It just seems weird though! It wasn't even pet mince and it wasn't from a dodgy shop or anything. Thanks for the advice. If so, no wonder he threw it up. Would you eat meat thats been sitting there out in the open for 8 hours?
Clyde
Probably not, but I bet the OP doesn't lick her genitals and cock her leg to pee either. My dogs will eat meat which has sat out for days. If the cats are saying no I would chuck it. In in doubt, I always chuck. It's just not worth the risk. Baby Dragon
So, was the mince sitting there all night? If so, no wonder he threw it up. Would you eat meat thats been sitting there out in the open for 8 hours? The dog always eats/licks the cat's left overs out of their bowl in the morning. It's never been a problem. ETA thanks Clyde Edited December 18, 2008 by Baby Dragon
t-time
If you haven't already chucked the meat, I'd be calling a health authority and finding out where you stand. You should definitely be able to get your money back under the circumstances - throwing away $40 worth of human grade meat is nothing to sneeze at!! And yes - really weird that the cats wouldn't eat it!! Cats have got iron stomachs!!
Steve
We have now posted our first minor questionaire on our website. Its designed to collect info to help us try to see patterns in the issues dogs suffer with We're asking for everyone who has had or who still has a sick dog to give us a few minutes to answer the questions for us. You will need to re do it for each dog and if its something that's happening now you are able to go back and update the info. It comes up as a pop up or a link at the top under survey on the front page of our website. www.mdba.net.au Julie
Animal House
Can you take it back to the supermarket and ask for a refund? Let them know the dog was ill from eating it, and the cats refused it. Cats are fussy, but if they refuse something its usually for a good reason. Hope your boy is feeling better today.
InspectorRex
a few years ago one of the Collies got campolybacter food poisoning from Premium Grade Human beef mince that I purchased fresh from the butcher. I would be getting the dog to the Vet and taking the mince with you and get it sent of to a Lab. for testing.
