Age Appropriate Tricks

Hi all

I have only just discovered this section... madness!

I have always been interested in the tricks side of things, but have generally been happy with a well behaved dog who has manners and knows the basics.

I now have a young gal, China, who is super smart and is going to get very bored very quickly if I don't do the extra stuff.

A bit of background, China is approx 7-8 mths large x-breed, smart as a tack and loves anything involving attention (of course  ).

She picked up the usual stuff - sit, drop, sit stay, drop stay, up (from drop to sit) etc very fast and I now find myself at the limits of my so-called trick knowledge.

Is there an order of tricks that I should go in? I was thinking I would try and teach her roll over/play dead and shake/high 5 next. Are there tricks I shouldn't try til she is older?

Any suggestions are more than welcome.

Thanks in advance.

A pic of my gorgeous gal... :)

Hi Alyssa, China is lovely & looks & sounds very intelligent.

I would probably be starting with teaching her to touch a target (like an icecream container lid). Not only will this get her operant, but it also forms the basis for a number of tricks. Have you/will you use a clicker?

Also walking backwards is a good one for body awareness. Likewise spin & weave through your legs.

Thanks Vickie.

I have never actually used clicker training. :noidea:

I started by teaching Tilba to shake both hands, which led to high five, which led to wave. As Kyliegirl said no jumping, weaving & limitied crawling until he's much older. Tilba also does touch nose to hand or small lid or target stick & touch her paws to a child's spinning top & we are now working on playing a toy piano.
