moggy
Sophie has very bad tear stains and I have tried EVERYTHING to cure them. So it was off to the vet today for investigation. He put some dye into her eyes which was supposed to turn green and come out her nose if the ducts were okay. Nothing. So the next step is for her to have a little op on Thursday morning where she will be put under a mild anaesthetic so he can examine the ducts, or lack of. Has anyone else had this procedure done on their dog? He is not promising it will be a success but at least we will know if the ducts are okay. InspectorRex
This procedure IMHO and experience SHOULD only be carried out by a Qualified Veterinary Opthamologist. He is looking to see if your dog has a Blocked Tear Duct. our beloved Maggie had one and when we saw a Vet opthamologist he was able to do the procedure under a local anaesthetic whilst we were in the room with her. If your Vet did the "tear test" )Schimmer I think it is called) and nothing came out of the nostrils then it does sound like the tear ducts could be blocked. I would NOT let a GP vet do this procedure at all.
moggy
When I phoned for an appointment the girl did mention an eye specialist who visits this hospital but said I would have to see the vet first. When I took Sophie to him he did not mention the eye specialist so I just thought he knew what he was doing.

moggy
Well, Sophie had her little op this morning and was a bit groggy but is getting back to normal now. Wow, do vets know how to charge. $298 which included consultation on Tuesday, anaesthetic today ($179) and catheterise and flush her tear ducts and Amacin ointment. He is very pessemistic about it working long term though. Could come back in 6 or 12 months. If it does we will just cope with it. At least we have tried to rectify the problem. t-time
Hi Moggy, I know you said you have tried EVERYTHING but have you tried using Dog Rocks in Sophie's water?? I've got terrible tear staining with my current puppies (probably temporary due to teething) but I'm now trying this out as some very experienced "white dog" breeders suggested it. I had never heard of it before (for tear staining) but this might help in the future? Just a suggestion.
moggy
Thanks for the suggestion t-time. I have never heard of them. Where could I buy them? I will give them a try if her surgery doesn't work.

Dogsfevr
basically after visiting the eye specialist & doing all the tests etc etc it was determined hers wheer so bad thery needed to re create. The used false tubing & redirected it to flow out of her nose. She was actually one of the first dogs in oz to have this procedure nearly 27 yrs ago. Worked a treat & no issues after words. If you havent seen an specialist as yet do so & ask on DOL for recommendations .Even if your vet uses someone the show dog folk deall without of eye specialists to get there dogs yearly eye clearances etcetc & we often now the bad ones & the good ones
