PooMother
HI I have a CAnon 40D and the lense that came with it is a EFS 17-85mm. Now I would like to take photos where I can really zoom in on a subject /object either in or outdoors. Any suggestions? Have done a search on here and am still confused as to what distance each lense will go to. Is there a book for camera dummies in plain english? Chloes Dad
I am not that familiar with canons lens range, But for the doggies i find i am usually around the 200mm mark. I see cannon have a 70-300mm Im not sure what this lens is like but it is $900.00 ish and would slot in to your existing set up nicely. they also have a 18-200, this would cover a wide focal range and mean less changing. I will pull my head in now and let the canon people come and give you their real world experience  when I look at the lenses available for cannon i have brand envy look at them all!!! http://www.d-d-photographics.com/canonlenses.htm and they are white and comparably inexpensive.... ruthless
You probably want either a 70-300mm telephoto or 100mm macro lens. Do you know the difference between telephoto and macro? I'm not sure from your question which you want! Edited December 16, 2008 by ruthless

Correct i have used a 70-300 f4.5-6 IS USM lens (cost me around $1000) i have used this for both agility and portrait shots works pretty well as long as the lighting is good. This lens isnt real good in dull light. I have just bought (my xmas pressie to me) the canon 70-200mm f2.8L USM lens this is serious bit of glass that isnt only quick but very sharp. It has cost me a bit tho as the L series lens's are not cheap. Unfortunately the IS version was another $1000. I am really excited with this lens and cant wait for it to arrive. this is an exceptional link and will give you a complete run down on certain lens's what they are good for, flaws etc http://www.the-digital-picture.com/ Edited December 16, 2008 by Tailwag
PooMother
I dont explain myself well lol. With the current lense if the dogs are at the other end of the yard I zoom in but when I download and edit I ahve to crop alot to get the close up I want, but I want more cos Im greedy. I sometimes have to get up close to get a nice picture. THanks for the web links I shall have a look. I will go through my photos and show you what I mean

chezzyr
PooMother: it sounds to me like you want/need a 'telephoto' lens, one that is longer than your current one (eg one that goes to 200mm or 300mm). Or you will just have to zoom with your feet

chezzyr
I deliberately didn't name any lens models/types because I don't know the OP's budget.
PooMother
I was sort of expecting a lense to be around the $1000 mark?
aquaticmalamute
You want the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Autofocus Lens Don't we all!! Due to huge cost I had to settle for the f/4 version which I love (but loved the 2.8 more! )
Tailwag
Ok this is what i have got when using my 70-300mm f4.5-6 EF IS USM Lens, gives you both sides of the coin...so action and still, as you can see it is a very versatile lens, my only gripe is the the fact it isnt a f2.8
chezzyr
Well, allow $2500 for the one Luke mentioned.

PooMother
Ok I need to set the budget somewhat higher then by the looks of it :-)
chezzyr
The 70-300 IS (samples shown) should be under $1000.
Tailwag
Ok for the weave shot as it was take at the Nats i was probably about 10 metres away for the diving shot again 10+ metres away Bees roughly 2 metres Landscap hard to judge the distance as i was standing on my verandah Links head shot again maybe 10 metres Sweeps portrait roughly 3 metres. Some of the agility shots i have taken have been maybe 20+ metres at some events but still managed to get decent shots
