Old Timer Staffie

Hi all,

a friend of mine has a 10 year old Staffie, who until recently was totally house trained. However, almost overnight he has become what appears to be incontinent. He will leak around the house apparantly unaware of the problem. Also his stools have become very frequent, 'runny' and lack the size and consistency of those previously. He remains very very active, no change there, his diet hasn't changed, no change in the family etc etc. During walks he stops as frequently as he ever used to but barely manages a dribble if anything at all!

He has had an ultrasound for kidneystones and no infection is apparant, he doesn't seem to be in any pain either. The vet has said it's just old age, I'm just surprised that it came on so suddenly and has also affected his stools.

He's currently banned from the house, it's such a shame as he's such a loveable dog and still so full of life........

Is it possible he could be treated for this???

Thanks in anticipation

Mark WA

Yes I to would be getting a second opinion. Things like that don't just happen overnight.

Are they sure it's not a UTI or some other generalised infection? Have they checked his prostate?

How about suggesting some belly bands so that the poor old thing isn't kicked outside all of the time. http://www.petsonthepark.com.au/category40_1.htm

Thanks for the replies, I've just spoken to his owner, he's had urine test, kidney X-Rays, prostate examination and been on 2 lots of antibiotics, the last one being extra strong..... With no change. This has been going on now since October.

Maybe a referal to a reproductive specialist if the owner is keen? The second lot of antibiotics may have been 'extra strong' in the vets words but if they were not the type needed in this case they are still just as useless as another.

Hope he feels better very soon.

I think I'm a bit keener than the owner... This dog is a nutcase and makes all the silly Staffie noises, he is sterilised, so would a reproductive specialist be able to help?
